So I'm putting together a trip to YNP from the 8th-12th of September... Monday-Friday. I'm gonna spend two nights in Tuolumne and wanted to spend two in the Valley. I was wondering what my chances would be to get into Camp 4 with 4 people during that week (I know it's unpredictable, but your "best guess" is good enough). Also, would it be easier to get in on a Monday afternoon/evening, or a Wednesday morning/afternoon? I could always stay in Tuolumne that whole week as there is plenty of space up there, but I'll have a Yosemite newbie with me and I wanted to try and sleep a night or two in the Valley itself. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Colin

You are going to be insanely cold in Tuolumne, I guar-an-tee. Check out the Eastside if you want to venture east of the valley.

mid september is pretty crowded in C4. Basically afternoons are a long shot to geta walk in spot, even during the week. If you really want to guarantee yourself a spot be there before the kiosk opens in the morning and wait in line. Obviously midweek is better, but I would still be there before 8.

Since Camp 4 is first come, first served and the kiosk opens at 8:00am, it's best to show up early one morning and wait in line to get a site. There's a line every morning and it's usually a 1-2 hour wait. You can arrive early (6:30a) and put in your two hours of waiting that way, or show up when they open and 8:00a and wait a couple of hours for the line in front of you to process through. Seems everyone who shows up by 8:00a usually gets a camping spot, but the best assurance is to show up earlier. Good news is you only have to do that crap once. You can book up to 7 days in the one visit to the kiosk. Send something big! Ed

I just got back from the valley, had no trouble getting a site in C4. Just be ready to get two double, or four single sites, because it's a lot harder to get a site for 4 all together. Once you all have a site, choose one to be your group camp, and hang out there. They put six people to a site, and they're huge. Other tents are always going up and down in your site as your neighbors come and go, so nobody knows who is supposed to be where. You may want to sleep at your seperate sites and party at one, or just set up together and leave the other sites you rented vacant. There's ample opportunity to bend the rules at C4 as long as you're discreet. The main thing is to have that "paid up" tag on your tent, and the parking sticker on your car.

I don't think you have to have a parking sticker on your car...... Some people park there and go backpacking for a few days... I think the lot is for anyone....Half the time i don't have a sticker..I've never been harrased about it.. Catra http://www.rocknrun.net

I'm just back from a week in C4, and they did tow a couple cars outa the C4 lot. On the other hand, I had an old C4 sticker in the window from June, never bothered to put the new one in, and I got no hassle. Guess they didn't look too closely. This suggests that if you have something in your window which at least fairly closely resembles a C4 sticker, you'll probably be ok. Most of the time. YMMV. Cheers, Tim

Oct Valley Weather: can be very nice during the day, even a little too warm, esp. on the north side climbs. Most times I've been there in Oct, it's been comfortable in the sun, a bit nippy in the shade. Then again, if a storm brews up, it can be 45 degrees and raining, which sucks even if you're on the ground. I can guar-an-tee, though, that whatever the days are like, the nights will be *cold*. (Caveat: the above is my experience in the Valley only. I have no beta for Tuolumne or other areas; others must supply wisdom pertaining thereto). C4: $5 a day.
