So have you or your friends ever actually used climbing as a means of escape; ie - getting out of a burning building? scaling fences ? getting out of ditch, or similar situation? or escape from ? Let's hear the stories? I knew was a climber who managed to get out of the world trade center on 9/11.

Never used it to escape from anything yet, except my wife.....ha ha ha. The knowledge of knots comes in handy all the time. I'll let you know if I decide to go for the wall at Huntsville State Prison.

I haven't ever had to escape anything, but I have used my buildering skills a couple of times to get into second story windows when my friends locked themselves out of their houses. Only with permission of course, except for that one time I climbed the college dorm wall to get into a friends room when he was on vacation. We did the old reverse the room layout trick, and a few other things.

This may not be true (in fact it quite probably isn't), but it's still a good story: I heard somewhere-or-other that the only time Reinhold Messner ever hurt himself climbing was when he locked himself out of his home and tried to climb the wall to break in, fell, and sprained his ankle.

lol, even though this thread is a troll, it is rather interesting. Can't recall escaping from anything by climbing. This may be because I've never been in all that much danger. I have gotten into places using my climbing skills though.

I have gotten into places using my climbing skills though. Hey thats not true, I was hoping for some special stories, climbing fences to get away from the police, or break out of jail, or out of a burning building, or even climbing out of a ditch. Hey did you see Cold Spring Manor? Sharon Stone climbed out of that devils mouth.I know that was a movie, but lots of things like that happen in real life. I had a friend climber that escaped out of the world trade center on 9/11 .

Or remember baby Jessica, now I know she was only 3 but, if her parents could have taught her a little technique, (well she might have been able to help herself a bit, to climb out of that hole), :P

Well, climbing hasn't helped me out of any sticky situations, but my friends and I have found interesting ways to put our gear to good use. 1.) During greek week two years ago, the sorority across the quad (the only one...my school is so sad) used their "girlfriend" connections inside my house to steal our banner (worth 2 points a day) while our entire house was in a meeting downstairs. My friend Joel roped up and climbed the tree in front of their house to hang our temporary banner until we got ours back. It read: "You owe us one greek week banner, bitchez." They cried. The school didn't have money to rent a cherry picker so they had to ask Joel to climb back up and take it down. He free-soloed it the second time. 2.) Every semester, we stack all the racks between the two opposing doors of the pledge rack (cold dorm for some of you) so that they can't open the doors. Getting back in is a great exercise in teamwork. Prior to this year, somebody has always just climbed down on a sheet-rope after putting in the final rack. This year I'll be rapping out the window after putting the keystone in place. Glad none of our pledges read RC.com.
