I signed up last week! Now that we are required to be members to compete in ABS comp's i signed up! I think it's a good idea, and I gladly signed up knowing all the great things abs has done for the climbing community. Good luck in ABS and or USCCA comps, see ya out there! :D -mike

If you love the sport for what it is, its definately a good idea. The comps are really fun and its a great chance to meet other climbers and possibly learn a few things. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that the ABS comps are open to all levels of skill from beginning to elite? So no matter your skill level, you should still be able to compete.

Anti-lock Braking Systems. Serious question -- is there really even a smattering of interest in competition climbing in the US? I'm in the 35+, fat-bastard, can't pull on plastic to save my life crowd, so there's certainly no interest for me personally. But I've had a chance to hang out with some younger, stronger climbers in this area (AZ) and most climber I know view indoor climbing simply as a necessary evil and certainly not something they aspire to compete in. Is it different in other areas of the country? Or is the percetion "no one really gives a damn" pretty accurate? Ed

Personally, I love the evening of hanging out with a huge horde of other climbers. The climbing is like always, a workout to keep in shape for the real rock and better than none at all, but the comeraderie and carefree attitude is what I go for.

Yeah, yeah, me too. Like I said a "necessary evil" to train and socialize, but not an end in itself. Competition climbing, on the other hand, is pulling plastic competitively. It's its own end. It doesn't seem to be nearly the attraction it was several years ago and certainly not as big as it is in Europe. Am I wrong? Take a look at this forum. There have been several threads this month, but in the entire month of July there were only TWO threads started about competition climbing. Looks like it's not a big draw with our membership, either. Ed

honestly, i think of competing/training and climbing outdoors as almost two different things. when im climbing ouside i dont think about competing, and it goes both ways. i love competing and id definatly say its worth it, its so fun!!!

ABS website is http://rockcomps.com people seem pretty psyched about them here in so cal and the better run comps draw upwards of 100 competitors.

Hey Rachel, Check out the comp at the Philly Rock Gym on Nov. 1st It's called the Midnite Burn and if you can get there it is well worth it. Last year sponsorship level was obscene. Vic won a Streling Rope and a Prana Shirt. Check it out and hope you guys are doin well Bob

Yeah, to all those who are skeptical of joining ABS, i'd say go for it! even if you only attend the minimum amount of comps, ABS does great things for the climbing community, and they put together sick comps, 10 dollars a year isn't much to ask for consistently great comps ? SEE YOU OUT THERE! www.rockcomps.com -mike :D

And maybe, if your not so good at bouldering, this would be your chance to get better :!: Hey, you said it yourself, you enjoy it, and you love going to comps, sounds like you need a membership :P

You're talking to the lowest finishing participant in the Wyoming Bouldering Series. I did better than the people who lost their score cards!

Melissa, Go to rockcomps.com to sign up. The shirt is extra... but only like $10 or so. There are 2 comps in TN... one in Memphis this weekend and one in Knoxville the end of January. I'm HOPEFULLY hitting the one in Knoxville. The schedule is on the website as well. Hope this helps. josh

I don't believe there is a minimum number of comps (or a max for that matter). The "national ranking" is based off of your top 4 comps. If you participate in less than 4, then your "ranking" just reflects that. I'm not too concerned with the ranking, but I know some people are. Josh
