Just so ya know rei has a $20 off coupon on one item in their new catalog. If your a member just go to the store and they will have extra. If you spend a certain amount, I think its $100 they will give you another coupon for $15 off a purchase of $100 or more between Oct 15 and nov 15. May not help you but if your like me its like free money back. Your going to spend the money there anyway. Most guys look forward to going to home depot i head to rei

It's 20% off, and expires the 13th, so unfortunately you can't combine the two, but I'm still getting my new Mythos. :D

Yeah, I have no money but that's a swell deal . . . here's my question: better investment, Petzl Reverso or Gri-gri? I will be doing some walls sooner or later, but I think Reverso's got some kind of auto-lock feature, right?

Talk to me.

The reverso sucks. I had one for a few MONTHS and it wore through to sharp edge on both sides. It's good in the design. It does auto-lock when you're belaying the second up a climb directly off the anchor (the device attaches to the anchor rather than you). I've rarely used it that way though since you can't count on it. It'd be good if you bring up multiple seconds a lot (maybe if you guide a lot?). But the truth is, as a regular belay device, it's no better than any other and it wears out FAST.

I have a Gri-Gri. It's great for the gym and some sporty sport areas mainly because when people hang, you can take your hand off the rope (and yes, I KNOW you shouldn't EVER do that) Again though, that's all it's good for and I rarely use it. You won't and SHOULDN'T use the Gri-Gri for trad climbs in general. It locks up so quickly that there's reletively little play in the system which increases the force on gear. This isn't AS important sport climbing since the bolts are designed to take a LARGE load.

My suggestion is just get a good, regular belay device. I use the BRD which is beefy. It locks up a bit to easily for my taste, but will last for a long time.

Just for all of you in Berkeley who might be interested in supporting the little guys. There is a small "mom n pop" gear shop across the street from REI called The Wilderness Exchange. They have a cooler staff, actually more climbing gear than REI and guarantee to have lower prices. They also buy and sell used gear as well. The reason that I am posting this is because they are honoring the REI coupons as well and its a way to get a heeluva deal on some stuff.
I have built my entire rack from these guys and I have spent hundreds less than alot of folks.
Check em out at www.wildernessexchange.com
Also they are currently doing a community gear swap this week which is a geat opportunity to clean out your gear closet and get a couple of shiney new cams!!!!

I'm getting a job at REI, so I don't think I'll be needing that coupon... MUAHAHAHA! :twisted:

for a wall .. get a grigri .. there are 1001 uses for a grigri on a wall..

* long belays
* rap fixed lines
* clean w/jug
* solo belay device

for trad .. get a reverso .. i wont go on a multipitch without mine .. it autolocks when belaying the 2nd. and it attaches to the anchor.. so its no sweat to escape the belay if you must .. and it gives you the freedom to do things like stack the rope, etc etc.

Last time these coupons we bought a crash pad with that 20% off and saved a lot of money. My advice, buy something expensive when these deals come around.

I love my Trango Pyramid :D . It handles rope so smoothly with such a simple design.

I have to admit that my reverso wore out pretty quickly, especially when I did a bunch of raps. Now I rap with my Trango pyramid and belay with my reverso. I picked up a new reverso for $15.99 during the last REI sale. That was a good deal.
