Following access concerns at Mount Nemo, Conservation Halton recently met with the Access Committee on site. The following concerns were discussed and clarified. -The re-located trail no longer approaches some of the descent gullies. -Newly planted trees are located near some of the old approaches. -Some logs marking trail delineation have been moved. -The top rope and rappelling ban was discussed. Most climbers agree with the aim of regeneration projects and we feel this is no exception. Responsible climbers usually see themselves as stewards of the environment they climb in and try to minimize impact. The trail relocation project was done with hikers in mind as the major user group, and while climbers are asked to respect the same rules, it is understood that in certain cases, exceptions will be necessary. Climbers are expected to cross the logs and use the accesses to the bottom in the least destructive manner possible. No blame for logs being moved was laid. Guidelines for climbers using Mount Nemo are listed below. Similar future projects are planned for south of the lookout. In a spirit of co-operation, an offer to assist was extended and volunteers will be needed in the spring 2004. The sport of rappelling is banned although the use of some fixed anchors for rappelling to the base of climbs will be accepted. The aim of the top rope ban is to reduce traffic in the cliff top area. It is imperative that climbers respect and police this ban to maintain access at Nemo. We feel the following guidelines to be straight forward yet important to future access. Mount Nemo Use Guidelines *A mandatory top rope ban is in effect. *Stay on the new trails. *Do not move any trail boundaries. *When departing the trail, move directly to the descent. *When finishing a climb, move directly to the trail. *Do not walk along the cliff edge or old trail. *Watch for, and avoid, new growth and saplings. *When departing the trail, keep a low profile so as not to encourage other trail users to leave the trail. Thanks for your ongoing efforts, DS. Let's hope the word gets out about these guidelines, people respect them and we can continue to climb at Nemo.
