why do so many people not like climbing gyms. I enjoy climbing in the alot not as much as out side but no one is goin 2 go outside and climb laps on a route to gain forearm strenght in the gym you can go and focus on one thing practice on climbing for lead climbing. practice droping your knee and outside you go and you climb a route and there is no practice involved or maybe its just me.

Rant: could you please do something more constructive with your subject lines in the future? "why" doesn't say much about what's inside your post. edit: thanks a bunch for the change.

I think the problem is climbing for practice.... I climb because it's fun. Getting stronger is just an bonus that comes from climbing. Gym's are there for training and the social atmosphere, but I don't get any enjoyment from cranking on strategically placed plastic holds in a chalk-dust filled indoor room...... Outdoors is the shizat

Indoors or Outdoors, i enjoy both. It's getting from point A to point B. Plastic or rock, doesn't matter to me. It's still a challenge and fun. Unique in its own ways. Kinda like ice hockey and roller hockey. One's not on ice but it's still fun to play. :D

In reply to: why do so many people not like climbing gyms. Becuase they can climb 5.12 outside but get spanked on 5.10's inside. Just joking! :D It's probably because they don't see the point in climbing in a dusty, smelly, unairconditioned, crowded building when you can climb outside in the sun and fresh air. Now that I think about it, why do I climb inside?

I don't know about you guys, but its nice to go to the gymn and meet up with some buddies you haven't seen in a whileand play on a route. Not to mention you get to have some quality time doing the closest thing to real rock climbing there is.

I pulled my shoulder and so did my friend at a climbing gym...never have gotten hurt outside...my partner had injured both of his knees at the gym...not worth it to me...that's my two cents...

Actually, I climb way harder in a gym. I'll try to lead routes indoors that I wouldn't consider leading outside. Probably ' cause I'm chicken-shit.

I have nothing against climbing gyms. While I only climb outside on real rock myself, I think the gym would be a good place to train those climbing muscles. Similar to running on a treadmill as apposed to outdoors.

Though you get really "strong" climbing indoors, the gym trains you to climb in a style that transfers poorly to outdoor climbing. Add to that the fact that almost all of my, and all of my buddies', climbing-related injuries have occured on plastic, and its easy to see why the gym isn't the best outlet to train for most climbing goals. However, good climbing gyms are fun and a good place to meet other climbers. I mean, where else can I climb after work in December when its pitch dark by quarter to 5.

In reply to: Though you get really "strong" climbing indoors, the gym trains you to climb in a style that transfers poorly to outdoor climbing. Depends a lot on the setter of the routes. All the drop knee's, backsteps, hand/foot matches, etc. that you do in the gym you should try to use outdoors. Problem is that people get outside and they panic and so they forget all those moves.

Well climbing in a gym does get boring, their is nothing new it all kinda seems the same outside you have alot more oppurtiunity to try diffrent things. why hide out inside when you can go to something real and show off your tan and have some real fun?? Shit there are more women that seem to go outside as well HEHEHE

I love to climb...outside, indoors...wherever,,of course, outside is better, but gyms are important if you want to improve. In my opinion, gyms are great to get a solid backgroud, but after a couple of years, nothing compares to real rock,

If someone is lucky enough to have an opportunity to climb outdoors in December, or after work, and they still chose the gym climbing, then thats rather silly. If the demographics don't allow you to climb outside, then either you go to the gym or you don't climb at all until your next climbing trip. There a lot of climbers who don't like the gyms so much, that they will not climb at all for a few months. Was the original question referring to these climbers?
