LOL! I had this partner/friend once who would make up the LAMEST injury exscuses for eveything. He would always, and I mean always talk about how he was the BEST at this or AWESOME at that, but when the time came to show his stuff he would give up this crappy excuse about something in him was JACKED and it was preventing him from doing it.

Climbing with him was the funniest thing ever cause he would be 1/2 way up some climbs and obviously be stumped on either where to go or how to muster the strength to do something. Then out of nowhere he would suddenly grab his hip and start yelling and whining about how this pain had started coming back. Funny, cause the pain would only come when he was doing tough climbs. I am not trying trash on him but everyone saw straight through him.

i have a buddy that swears he will never be a good climber cuz he doesn't "have the right body type" to climb. ??? wtf?? He's about 5'11" and 190lbs and a former collegiate athelete... He could be a totally kick ass climber. he says that while this 6'2" guy with a big beer belly flys up on the route next to him... i say "uhhh, hey dude, look to your right" that left him without anymore excuses.

I watched him climb many times...honestly, he's just scared outta his mind. He does the elvis thing whenever he's on a lil' tiny foothold. When that starts happenin - take rope cuz he's about to peel...then he does and he's holdin' onto the rope with both hands as he swings. Lower him, then he's all cool again...while everyone else spanks the route as he watches.

"I'm not in the mood" (invalid excuse)

"I lost 8 fingers to frostbite" (valid excuse)

oh, i've actually gotten a lot of excuses like these from non-climbers that i've tried to introduce to the sport:

- "i'm too fat/heavy for climbing."
- "climbing requires a lot of upper body strength. i don't have them."
- "my arms are too weak for climbing."
- "i'm afraid of heights."

and this is one i get the most:

- "yeah sure, i'll join you guys one day." And they never did.

In reply to:
My brother used this once...."it's too windy"

nobody is asking but once, i was climbing on lead, it was windy, and trying to reach for the next right handhold, the wind got so strong that started pulling me away from the wall, i was balanced with my left hand and left foot, right foot on a crymp so i had to stop and wait for the wind to stop and carry on later...

yep

I believe that there is a certain etiquette to climbing excuses that should be respected, especially when you have a visitor from someplace else.

As a rule, the visitor is entitled to use the following excuses:
"I'm not used to this type of rock."
"I'm not used to this type of altitude."
"I'm not used to this type of gravity."

As the host, you should use these:
"I'm getting over a bad injury."
"I'm getting over a bad hangover."
"I'm getting over a bad relationship."

I herd the best one from my friends girlfriend (who is the one who got us started) she only did 1 climb and when i asked her later that night why she had not climbed she told me that she had helped leed so that we could climb. That may work if she had done more than belay him while he set the top rope for us

I'm just too tired and my fingers feel like they're falling off.
I don't use the second one until I can't even type a reply in the forum or write the next days exam so that one's valid. The first one is my wimp one I'm afraid.

Courtesy of Curt on a traverse:
"I have an unnatural fear of widths"

Out of Queen Creek Guide:
"There are too amny people watching'
"There aren't enough people watching"

I like to use those two in succesion. After the first, my belayer usually points out that we are the only ones there, ergo...

These goddam shoes are all worn out. My tips are blown. I'm completely pumped from cranking 5.13 all day yesterday. The holds are greasy. I have tendonitis, the sun's in my eyes, I haven't climbed in 6 weeks. I hurt myself sweatin' to the oldies. I tweaked a muscle. It's too hot. It's too cold. It's too windy. The sun is in my eyes. Sunspot activity, my fingernails are too long. I bumped my knee. These sunglasses are scratched. Retinitis Pigmentosa. Heart condition. Coma. Irritable bowel syndrome. Dehydration. Bug bites. Low on chalk. Forgot to take vitamins. Religious convictions. Bad beta. Tight shorts. Hyperextended thyroid. Bomb threat. Cheap boxers. Low self esteem. Biorhythyms. Bad back. Rabies......

Heard 'em all, used 'em all.

I'll list the excuses I've given:

I don't have the energy
I gotta poop bad, and that harness will probably squeeze it out
There's spiders on the route
It's too cold (5C or colder)
The route is currently a waterfall!!

There's more but that'll do.
