Hey all, I have a question about lead climbing in a climbing gym. At the gym I frequent, I can always climb 5.10 without significant problems, and most of the time climb 5.11, if not I can normally link it within a few tries on toprope. I've been climbing alot lately, and i'm feeling pretty strong, a few months back I took the lead test on a 5.9 and got it first try. Ever since I havn't really been doing any lead climbing. I'd really like my partner to take the test, but he's a little skeptical of it, and doesn't feel the need to. I wouldn't feel comfortable leading a 5.10, but I think I'd like to start out on 9's and 8's but I just can't bring myself to do it, what should I do ? How can I get my partner motivated to take it? thanks for your opinions -mike

If your partner is half-way serious about climbing, get him/her out on some real rock. There are tons of 5.6 & 7's that should get you motivated for trying harder things. I think it would be a big mistake to start leading on something that you're not entirely comfortable with. Once the mechanics of leading start to become not so much of an issue, then bump it up a notch or two.

Yeah, he is serious about climbing, the only problem with us climbing outside at this point is that we're not of age to drive to the local outdoor spots yet. The only lead climbing that we can do is at the local indoor climbing gym. I'm trying to motivate him to take the test, and I think i'm getting closer! Thanks for the advice ~mike

start on the easy stuff. as for driving. im sure people in your gym talk about climbing on the rock during weekend. just ask them if they have space for two additional climbers.

Bring him an XL pair of panties with TOPROPER written across the butt. Tell him he has to wear them until he takes the test. That oughta do it! DMT

What's the problem with you leading and your partner toproping? Sounds like a perfect match to me: You lead on up and set the toprope, partner follows and cleans... :D

leading is a personal choice. It takes time for some people to start trying. Some people won't take the leap and some will. Keep motivating him as long as is ok with him. Remember it has to be fun and not an obligation, it can get anoying for him if somebody insists too much. Help him to climb better, that should be a good start and leading will come...
