I did popo many moons ago and it was cold. The basecamp was @ 12,000' in a cold lodge. The next night was at the hut, 14,700 and it was colder. Have fun. m

I'm heading to MX myself, but later on in the dry season. My understanding is that you'll be fine if you're prepared for 0-deg F. I'd like to hear how your trip goes, and what routes you do. Good Luck!

I'm moving this to the international forum, as it relates to Mexico.

A couple of years ago I used a 20 degree bag with a bivy sack and was comfortable in December at the base camp of Orizaba (Piedre Grande) which is around 14,000 ft. That's as high up as you need to (should) sleep.

we went to Mexico in March last year and the temperature on Orizaba was around freezing (30 F) at night at high camp (16,000ish) with no wind so our 20 degree bags were perfect.

we're going again next week (Dec 6-14) and from talking with people, we are expecting probably 10-20 degrees F at night with maybe a bit more wind. we are taking 10 degree down bags this time. and lots of Smartwool.

I finally went to El Pico...and for any of those who are having the same question that I had before...with a -20 sleeping it's very enough especially if you sleep in your own tent...(the hut it's very noisy in the night anyway!) we've been suprise by a snow storm even if it's not season for snow showers! Be alert it's high altitude!
