So tonight I was watching "24" when I saw a commercial with these two guys talking about things they would and wouldn't do: "horseback riding?" "no way, they're too big"; "motorcycles?" "too dangerous", and so on. The camera cuts away, and it was two guys on a portaledge on some big wall somewhere. Anybody else see this ad? Where is the wall?

I saw this add for the first time last week. I was totaly amazed and at the same time horrofied at the though of another aspect of climbing going"mainstream" . But I did a little checking and found out that it's al CGI... just 2 guys on ledge in studio...It's a lot cheaper (and safer) to get a computer to generate the Big Wall than to set up a location shot.

A buddy of mine worked on that ad, he actually tried to buy some the of the equipment cheap for me. I asked him if either of the actors actually climbed and he told me no, he didn't think so. Ah well, nice view anyway.

And it was filmed in France

I'm in advertising and I climb and I liked the ad a lot. Not the best, but one of the better efforts. And it obviously worked for so many people to be recalling it. As far as it taking climbing mainstream, I don't think that's a huge danger. Climbing is a great activity. Period. If more people get into, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Will everyone who climbs be good at it or good for the sport? No. Any more than everybody who drives is good at it or is good for driving in general. No one "owns" climbing. Have you climbed since you emerged from your mother's womb? Doubtful. Somebody turned you onto it. Whoever you are, however long you've been climbing, whatever your level of ability, there's someone who's been at it longer and is better at it. I wish folks would get over this "it's MY sport so stay out of it" mentality. And besides, the sport has a self-limiting factor: most people think it's highly dangerous and scary. So move on.

Anyone notice one strange thing about that ad? I've never seen or slept in a portaledge that is actually designed for both guys to have their heads at the same end of the ledge. There's a reason of ofcoarse that ledges are designed for two people to sleep head/toe. It balances the ledge. No matter how faithful they try to be it's funny how directors seem to always insist on altering the little details of real climbing that are painfully obvious to anyone who actually climbs.

Haven't see that one, but I did see a commercial the other night where these guys go to climb some heinous rock, get there, look at it and decide to go climb some shorter rocks. Too funny. Same group goes to some 5th class white water, takes a look at the rapids and one guy's like, if we do a 2nd class and a 3rd class run, that adds up to 5th, right? They all agree and leave. Nice touch and a nice belly laugh. DMT

In reply to: No matter how faithful they try to be it's funny how directors seem to always insist on altering the little details of real climbing that are painfully obvious to anyone who actually climbs. The general viewing public would think they were gay or something. Not that there is anything wrong with that! As VW has found out, gay commercials only work in selected markets (bow bow bow). DMT

DMT I would like to see more gay/bi or who ever get into climbing, as I am and drive a Golf :) Also been climbing for 10 years LOL But I give them props to a decent commercial, and it does show some truth and humor to the sport. I can recall a lot of funny talks my climbing partners and I have had around the camp fires or at the base of climbs...

In reply to: The general viewing public would think they were gay or something  Ofcoarse! I missed the whole point of the ad. It's targeted at white, middle class, gay, big wall climbers between the ages of 25-40. Visa is finally going after that untapped demographic. It's about time! They've been ignored long enough.

Add another one to the tally. I saw it and liked it a lot more then the crazy free soloing one by the marines. Pluss, as said before, it shows the "average Joe" climber joking with their partners. <- not to be confused with any other type of "partner" when two guys are laying next to each other.

That comericial was pretty cool. I'd like to see it several more times, just so I could catch the details....But a great idea, apealing to men and being a "man." Cause we all know, climbing is a strictly man's sport  riiiiight

That was hilarious  because they had no haulbags or any gear of any kind at all with them just them and the ledge. and only one anchor point and no ropes or anything    thats funny...
