Daniel, It's a KILLER place to climb but perhaps not the BEST place to teach yourself outdoor climbing. If you want to get the ball rolling, I'd reccomend getting a guide to show you the ropes: http://www.vertical-adventures.com/guides/ or http://www.joshuatreerockclimbing.com/ Good luck! MS

I would not recommend Vertical Adventures because Bob Gaines (the owner) is a cocky sob who turned Tahquitz into a sport crag. That being said, www.uprising.com is a gym in Palm Springs, and they have great guides. I would rec them and joshuatreerockclimbingschool. TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag

don't pay, but go with someone who knows what's up. You'll have a much better time. I took my little brother out to J-Tree for 5 days a couple weeks ago, and we climbed 25+ routes of many star quality. does anyone apprentice anymore?

In reply to: I would not recommend Vertical Adventures because Bob Gaines (the owner) is a cocky sob who turned Tahquitz into a sport crag. Pure BS. Vertical Adventures has a fine reputation, and its guides are among the most accomplished climbers in the country. -Jay

Sorry guys, but I have to disagree with those of you who say that J-tree is not a good place to learn outdoor climbing. I started climbing there in 1992. It was and is a great place to learn the sport. Bolted and "Trad" climbs alike in almost every grade. "Sporty" bolted climbs and well protected to freakishly ran out trad routes. Take some draws, about 30 feet of webbing, and a 60 M rope and there are enough bolted climbs to keep you busy for a year. Toss in a half dozen cams and a set of stoppers, and you have even more options. Do get a guide book. It'll help you find climbs in the range you want, and keep you on the right trail for apporaches. Not that they're hard approaches. In fact, they're some of the easier ones I've seen. Go out, have fun, and be safe.

TRADitionally yours, Cali Dirtbag I had a great experience with Veritcal Adventures a few years ago (Scott Cosgrove taught the class). Bob seems nice enough but admittedly, I've never spent much time with him. As far as sport bolting goes, which lines are those?! I'm anxious to get off the "please God let me get to that next bolt 15 feet further up" routes.

Let me add my vote of confidence to Bob Gaines. He's a good guy and runs a first-class operation.

Indeed, for the little bit that I knew him, Bob and his outfit were good peeps. Tahquitz a sport crag? Please provide an itemized list of routes to see if they meet the sport crag definition.

Hey adderoids, or hemeroids, whatever your name is, the fact that you had to take a class says it all, ive been on alot of bob`s routes and i actualy search out his routes, the guy rocks as far as putting up routes. all the cracks have pretty much been climbed out there, so, wheres the next place to look? out on the faces of course, just cause you cant send desperate face lines doesnt make him a sport climber. eat your words, or ill feed them to ya.

Flame wars are why this site has become such a bore to visit...please give the other posters the right to have their say, will you? Their opinions are at least as valid as yours.

I took a class with Vertical Adventures to jumpstart my trad leading. Clark Jacobs was the instructor and it was great. Met Bob on a climb there and he seemed a warm, friendly guy. Tahquitz a sport crag? Hah!

I think you should hook up with someone who knows what's going on. Maybe take some basic classes like anchors. This should help to get things going. Down the road you can take some more advanced classes. The point to my blabbing is go with someone that has a lot of experience... 8)
