I'd like to pose two questions: 1) What is (are) the best climbing film(s) you've ever seen? 2) What are the components of a cool film? mucho gracias mookdawg

All depends what you are into. I personally love "Front Range Freaks" some great Trad in there, A special segment on Derek Hersey, "Dyno-Soar" with Paul Glover, and of course the awesome Short Film by Timmy O'Neill "Urban Ape". There are three good Trad sections in the film, Heidi Wertz on the Wasp, and two guys setting Trad FA's. my total collection includes the following: Inertia 1 & 2, Front Range Freaks, Dosage Vol. 1, The Professionals, Masters of Stone V (Good for a solid adrenaline rush) and of course all props need to go out to the man Ron Kauk for "Yosemite: Ascending rhythm". Just my $0.02. Keep pullin', Eric

The Eiger Sanction has to be my favorite Hollywood climbing movie. Nothing else really comes close. Mr. Mons

Just watched The Eiger Sanction with Clint Eastwood, Circa 1975. This is a must see climbing film; good footage although fun to make fun of how it is pieced together. The sexist attitudes from this time period are equally amusing, and the plot is Hollywood at its best - an ex-assassin is recruited back into the biz after becoming an art professor - and is blackmailed into doing the climb to save his collection of priceless paintings.

Wow! That is an asinine premise. I have to see that.

I haven't seen many climbing movies or films but I did see Josh Lowell's 'Pilgrimage' with Chris Sharma, Nate Gold and Katie Brown. That movie was awesome, very inspiring and funny. I recommend checking it out. :)

personal favorite-non hollywood style is called The REal THing with Ben Moon and Jerry Moffatt (bouldering)...music makes it happen as well as it is done in storyline fashion about real people and real places-with all the antics that go along with. (it's by Positive Power Productions)....

Front range freaks is not a good movie. The trad bits are ok, but they're only a small part. Big Stone, and MOS 2,3,4 and 5 are probably the best one's out there. I'm not really into bouldering vids. Boooooring.

The original Masters of Stone is HILARIOUS. There are many worthy mullets in that film, but Kurt Smith's wins, hands down. It's even slightly shaved on the sides to accentuate the long lush tail in back. And Kauk slacklines a chain in cowboy boots. It's AWEsome.

The climbing scene near the beginning of "Seven Years in Tibet" really had me on the edge of my seat. It's a realistic portrayal of 1940's style mountaineering on steep icy rock. Very well done and exciting.

So far Rampage is the best I've seen. Free Hueco takes a close second. I saw a trailer for Pilgrimage and it looks pretty good. As does Uncommon Ground and Auto Toure. Inertia and part 2 are far and away the worst films ever made. In any genre. It's like someone gave a drunk guy a sharp viewcam and a blindfold.

I love Rampage, Uncommon Ground, and especially Dosage Vol. 1. I also think that Vertical Limit was by far one of the most unrealistic, stupid climbing videos ever! "oh hey, let's save a stranded girl by climbing K2 with Nitroglycerin!" . . .yeah right. I really want to see the new one in India, pilgrimage. Basically anything made by BigUP is sweet.

My collection.... Rampage - good, cool music but a little to much travelling and not enough climbing. MOS 5 - OK, The Potter shots were rad but that idiot screaming at yosemite ruined the whole movie. Inertia 1 - Very Good, action packed good movie, gets you stoked to go climb. Inertia 2 - Lame, You will be board out of your mind watching this one. Front Range Freaks - OK, Some scenes were good but overall a little lame. Scary Faces - OK, would have been better if there were a little more action, a little slow. Can't beat peoples stories falling on Jules Verne. Doseage - Good, thought it was put together well and lots of good footage from all the top climbers. Best ski video - Further by Teton Gravity Research....check it out.

In reply to: I like Vertical Limit because it is so realistic. It even has Ed Viesturs in it. He looked embarassed. K2 is the better of the modern Follywoods, but it does have its own shortcomings. http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=115684&highlight=#115684

I must say that Tour de blocs is a great flick, everytime i see it i wish i grew up near the forrest. Stone Love is pretty good, Malcom Smith is the man, its funny to see ben Moon with an injury and jerry Moffat trying to keep up with Malcom. Floored on how easy he flys up shi#. All they can do is try to downplay the ascent. Funny shi#! Rampage is great, thats what inspired me to really focus on bouldering! Anyone seen boulder, I got it for a birthday because it sounded all right, but Udo Neumann f#cked it all up by giving a 15 min introduction to circut bouldering in the font forrest. Take about bull s#it, most the problems are V0-V2 and all we see is Udo's giant hair and his arse for like 25 problems. With some of the worst music and interviews ever. Yo Udo ever heard of Subtitles while interviewing Nicole, not all of speak Yidesh and French etc... After that seeing Fred Nicole pull on some nasty crimps on Radja V13/14(1st v14 in the world) I was still pissed at Udo for producing this film and stealing my money!HAHAHA

ascending rhythm!! It's the best becuase it shows the beauty and the climbing, with out trying to glorify it. Climbing doesnt need to be glorified just watching it is enough, as this film shows

I can tell you what the WORST climbing move is, except for one 20-30 foot highball boulder fall onto a crashpad. It is called Friction Addiction, it was sponsered by Nike!. But as for good films, Front Range Freaks looks really sweet, i only saw previews and a small portion of it but it looks cool. And rampage is pretty darn good.
