dont know if this has been asked before but where did the term redpoint, flash & onsight come from?

well, onsight is obviously from "on sight", french avue or something.

Red point refers, IIRC, to the fact that old FA attempts were marked with a painted red circle (in Europe) at the base of the climb that would mark the FA'ers "territory" until he completed it. Then the red circle would be filled in to make a red point (maybe from German rotpunkt?--not to be confused with Blaupunkt, maker of marginal-quality car stereo equipment :D )

Well, not exactly. When Kurt Albert started to make free ascents of the established (aid) lines in Frankenjura, he painted a red point (rotpunkt) on the base of each route he successfully climbed without resting on gear - the style currently known as "redpoint" or "RP" (in Europe).

But I have no idea where does flash come from. Maybe its because doing something 1st try is lightning-fast? :D

These terms all come to us from sport climbing, wherein the participants feel the need to carefully categorize and document the exact degree of cheating used to climb a given route.
