Hey!!! Is this still on, or not? I'm game, but not sure how many others are still planning to attend. Looks like we don't have any accomodations at this point, but at the worst, we could camp at the BLM land down the road. Anyone still want to go? One caveat for me -- if it's as freezing as it was last weekend, I'm taking photos and smoking stogies. Screw climbing with popsicles for fingers. :P Ed

Ed, you're such a baby. This weekend in J Tree I was hypothermic about 50% of the time (the other 50% involved me sitting in Crossroads and sleeping in my down bag). *I* still climbed.

Well, I know the campsites in Indian Cove and Hidden Valley are all first come/first served, but what do you think my chances are of booking a group site at IC for that weekend? Anyone interested? I'll have the Monday following that weekend off for MLK day, so I'll stay through Sunday night -- campsite for Friday, Sat, and Sunday nights. Anyone got a better plan?

In reply to: Well, I know the campsites in Indian Cove and Hidden Valley are all first come/first served.... You are mistaken... Indian Cove family sites are also reservable. You can go to the NPS site and reserve a site, that is, if there are any available. -J

me and a friend will be coming out to j-tree 1/15-1/18 (climbing on the 16th-18th, hopefully). we're wussing out and staying in a room in palm springs instead of hauling out camping gear (esp. since i don't have a particularly warm bag). where's the most likely place to come to meet some of you people during the day or in the evenings? crag or campfire, i'd love to meet some rc.com'ers!

neuroshock, I think you are going to be shocked at the distance you are going to have to commute from Palm Springs to J-Tree everyday. Maybe you have your reasons, but I think staying in Hotel in J-tree or 29 Palms would be more convient.

It's cheaper and much closer to stay in the town of joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, or 29 Palms than Palm Springs. I'd say the drive from Palm Springs would be at least an hour to the Park entrance, compared with 0 to 10 minutes from Joshua Tree or Yucca Valley.

For me, the Crossroads Cafe near the West entrance of the park is the only place to eat in the area. I have been disappointed everywhere else. Sorry, I don't know about meeting up with the RC. JT is pretty diverse, but a regular rack of nuts and cams seems to get me through. I think there is a list of recommended JT climbs on this site sorted by level already. I am sure you can search this site and find it.

In reply to: as to my original post, where can i most likely meet some rc.com'ers that weekend? are waits for good classics expected to be insanely long? If you loiter around the Intersection Rock parking lot btwn about 8:30am-10am on a Saturday, someone you know will likely come across your path. And if you get bored you have Intersection Rock (Overhang Bypass, the Flake, North Overhang, Mike's Book) and Old Woman (Double Cross, Toejam, Orphan, Dandelion, Bearded Cabbage) right there to climb on. While they are popular climbs, you can usually get on without too much wait in the mornings. As far as the classics, who knows? Last weekend the weather out there was sublime and there were suprisingly few climbers out there (in comparison to a normal winter wkd). Then other weekends it'll be packed. Luck of the draw out there. For food, Edchada's in 29 Palms is pretty good as far as Mexican goes. And Crossroads outside the park entrance is delicious too.
