Thought I would post this in here as well...

I am planning a month long trip back to Thailand in the spring, looking like the month of June. Obviously I will be climbing and thought I would see if anyone else out there is gonna be in the Krabi area during the month of June.

If you are interested in hooking up for some climbs let me know. It is surely one of the nicest places to climb and I cant wait to get back there.

Cheers

I will be there for the majority of May (11ish-31st or so). Although, these dates are not set yet. Is it possible for you to move the trip up a couple weeks? I don't have a partner yet, and it would be great to have someone show me around. Where do you normally stay? I have not decided on a place. I thought I would just get there and decide later where to stay.

I'm planning on heading to Thailand for a month mid April 2004 but dates are not set. Maybe we can hook up for a couple of routes...I'm climbing 10c but hope to be in the 11's by then...

I have a friend who just returned from Krabi - he can send me a list of guides if you are interested. It sounds beautiful!

MikeG - I would love to hook up for a climb if you are still around in June. My plan is to leave from Vancouver on May 31st and be in Krabi the 3rd of June give or take a day of two....so, if you are there, let's climb. I am climbing up to 10b leads right now, but am doing as much indoor training as I can between now and June so I should be able to up my grade. For TR I can climb into the low 11's.

Watersprite - Thanks for the offer, but I have been there and am familiar with the different guides and climbing schools, however I am looking to get my hands on a route guide and am willing to pay cash for a copy - think your friend has one of those? I know they exsist, just not sure where to start looking.

Nate - It is pretty much summer time year round there, it is never really cold and even during monsoon season, the rain is heavy for a few hours and then it stops. The last time I was in Thailand was at the same time and did not get a drop of rain the whole time I was there. So, you would be safe to go during summer - it is low season and things cost less and not as many crazy tourists around.

Thanks for the responses and hopefully I will be able to hook up with a few people while I am out there!!!

Cheers
Nathalie :)

I've heard the climbing is great there, but i've never heard any details. Sport? Trad? Bouldering? What kind of rock? I've wanted to go to Thailand since long before i started climbing, now i've just got a lot more motivation. :D

There are guide books around -I have seen one and it was actually a really good one, but that was over two years ago when I was there last.

As for the type of climbing, there is tons of sport climbing, a bit of bouldering and I think a couple of small multipitch climbs. The rock is mainly limestone, but it is world class climbing!!!! Absolutely amazing and highly recommend getting there at least once in a lifetime.

There are some cool caves that you can go through and then rap down in order to climb other faces of the rock. It is the coolest thing, pitch black, bamboo ladders, and bats all over.

Anyway, if you have resources for the guide book or want to climb in the spring, let me know.

Cheers

I just got back from Krabi last week. Absolutely amazing experience. Now I know why a lot of climbers make it a yearly trip there.

The routes are mostly bolted sport climbing. The guide books can be purchased thru one of the climbing shops around. I bought mine for 600 BAHT at Wee's.

wonderwoman and I are planning on honeymooning there the end of June. It is supposedly during the rainy season, but most of the feedback I have gotten says that it is still worth going. They say it doesnt rain for very long and dries quickly. Maybe we'll see you there.

If you have a chance, and are into bouldering, check out the small island of Koh Tao. You can take a bus to Chumporn and from there a speed-ferry to Koh Tao. It's a rocking place to do some diving too!

I'll be there for pretty much all of june. I'm meeting a friend from Honk Kong who's bringing along his pal who apparently knows Thai climbing quite well so I'll be down with the inside beta and interpreter.

If anyone wants to hook up and climb then PM me.

Oh, I plan on doing bouldering and sport, don't care about grades although would like to push myself on some harder (12s) stuff. Generally be chillin on the longer easier routes away from whatever crowds may be there.

Also entertaining the idea of hitting up Vietnam or one of the other surrounding countries for some climbing.

Well, I'll be in the area May - July. I was expecting to be in Thailand around end of May / beginning of June and would like to do some routes.

If it worked out to hook up, that'd be great. I do have a question about gear though. Since I'll be in the area for so long doping different things, I want to bring the minimal necessary gear. I want to seea bout climbing some undeveloped stuff in CHina too.

So ideally I need rope, quickdraws and trad gear and shoes. I'm bringing shoes. What of the rest of ths stuff can be acquired over there? Is it reasonable to assume that I can purchase a trustworthy rope and quickdraws over there for a price not more than I would pay here? Or rent the gear?
How about trad gear? As I understand it's not so useful in thailand, but considering I want to go to China and climb too (assuming I find a partner).

wonderwoman and I have bought our tickets. Yeehaaaw!! We are leaving June 20th and returning July 3. We have the Lonely Planet guide to Thailand and the King climbing guide. Our passports are on the way. Is there anything else we need to do?

Do we need vaccinations? which ones?
Anything else we need to get in and out of the country?

No. If you are just going to major cities and Krabi, none.

Hi there.
I've been to Pranang, Krabi 7 times, and thought i can offer a little unsolicited info that might be helpful.

If you're on a budget, the Tonsai area is where you would want to stay. It's also alot more quiet and less commercialised.
The Railay area is catered more for tourists. there's a swimming pool right behind the beautiful beach! very noisy, expensive, BUT..., alot cosier to chill out just before and after sunset.

Recommended Accomodation:
The Andaman Resort and Dream Valley Resort offers some of the best accomodation at Tonsai. You'll get a discount if you book their rooms by the month.

Recommended Food:
The food at Andaman Restaurant is good and the portion more than generous. And i always go to Coco's Restaurant(railay side) for Fried Baracuda in garlic pepper sauce when i'm there. And try the Banana Prata(sold at small food stalls) with all the toppings.

Recommended Crags:
For grades below 7a: 123 Wall, The Keep, Hidden World, Maui Thai, Dum's Kitchen, ThaiWand Wall
Grades 7a-7c: Tonsai Wall, Wild Kingdom, ThaiWand Wall
Above 7c: Tonsai area, Dum's kitchen
The most accesable mulit-pitch is the one at Tonsai called Humanality, 6B+ Easy and very enjoyable.
Other multi-pitches worth doing will be at ThaiWand Wall.

The Climbing:
Very well protected. Hangers are constantly scrutinized for rust(it's very humid there). Anchors are very kiasu(singaporean term for "afraid to lose out"). Runouts are usually not an issue except on some routes. Do drink lots of water. Don't climb at 12 noon, except on overcast weather. Keep a lookout for sudden downpours. And bring lots of chalk and sunblock!

Ahhhh..., how i wish i can go this Jun... the sun, the sea, the climbing, the people, the food, the fireshow, .... i miss the place.

Enjoy your trip! if anyone needs info climbing in Malaysia or Singapore , i can help too.

cheers
Ben

You can find a book named KING CLIMBERS Route Guide Book online if you want to browse and plan ahead of time or buy it at King Climbers when you get to Krabi. His shop and others are on the way to One, Two, Three wall. Good luck!
