I had duct tape on my quickdraws marking them for like a year. Not on the biners, but on the draws themselves. anyone think the chemicals in the glue could affect the strength of the draws

I dont really think that tape will harm your runners. I use tape to mark the middle of my rope

If you retire your sewn gear in the recommended time frame, I don't think you have anything to worry about. I think long exposure to sunlight when climbing is a bigger issue. Cheers

...in fact the tape might help by reflecting sunlight. You better tape up all your 'draws!

Plus if the nylon fails at least the you have the duct tape as a back up. Remember duct tape holds the world together.

In reply to: Plus if the nylon fails at least the you have the duct tape as a back up. Remember duct tape holds the world together. Yup, it's like the force. It has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together.

Everyone's been pretty lighthearted here, but I'd be nervous putting duct tape onto my runners. I've seen the glue eat the paint off of a car before. I'm not a chemist, so I won't speculate with my limited knowledge wether or not the adhesive in Duct tape will chemically affect nylon. Keep in mind though that I once watched an entire $50 piece of crash pad foam melt into nothingness after applying contact cement. Best to err on the side of saftey if you ask me. Any Chemists in the House? Travis

Dont put it in the nylon, put it on the stem of the carabiner so you dont have to worry about it.

I think it's OK. I once took the middle tape off of an old rope and was shocked to see what amazing condition the rope under the tape was in, compared to rest of it. Conclusion: duck tape preserves the life of your rope. :P

Actually I use two pieces of duct tape. The first layer is rolled around the quickdraw, and has the adhesive pointing out, while still being nice and tight (but not too tight, about 2mm of leeway). Then I put a 2nd layer over the first layer with the adhesive in. This way, I have 2x duct tape protection from UV rays (I'll get back to you with the SPF ratings) and don't have to worry about any chemical reactions.

Excuse my ignorance on this one, but what exactly is the purpose of putting tape on your draws? I've noticed people who do this before but never really thought anything of it until I read this thread. Anyone? Please!
