Just curious. There are so many variations of people on here, I was wondering what kind of variation there is in what people do for a living? What are the ebst and worst jobs you've had? Ever do something for the sole reason of going climbing (to get cash, or location, etc..) There was a time that I delivered pizzas for dominoes just so I could make enough gas money to get out and climb. That sucked. Now I do private contract geek work. Great pay, excellent boss (ME!), and plenty of days off. Only problem is that it's not a steady paycheck so I cant go blowing my money on gear and trips  One day though...one day.....

I just spend money on gear whenever I happen to have some, and take care of everything I own. I have no job, because that would interfere with my climbing, so I get by on my parents' food and whatever odd jobs I can get when I need cash.

In reply to: By staying mainly in the Shire and above all DO NOT PUT ON THE RING. Gandalf will save you. Oh, you said climbing "habbit"... I'm so glad that somebody else thought of that... I also gotta add that the climb up to Shelob's lair in ROTK looked seriously exposed.

The only way that I am able to do what I do is that I barely afford it. I really need new clothes, but I'm out there buying climbing gear or spending dinero on gas or something every weekend. The magic of Student Loans is nice, too. Can't wait to pay off $16 grand when I'm done and can't find a job as a lecturer. Would rather be doing it that way than wasting my life in an office employing my brain a bit, but my potential rotting. Oh yes.

i somehow manage to get through 40hrs at a job that, while it definitely has its perks, does not make me happy, but pays the bills. however, with graduate school approaching, soon work will end, school will begin and i'll have more free climbing time! woohoo!!!

I (somewhat illegally) have taken the initiative and raised money for climbing gear by selling drinks at school. Simple enough, I can purchase cans of pepsi at 50c each, I sell them at school for $1, the school sells them for $1.50 a can so everyone buys the cans from me. I keep them cold, sell 50 a day, so I make a rough AU$125 profit a week. All good, except school's out until the start of february, and it's the first time I've ever regretted it. Methinks its time for a new scheme.....

I own a physical therapy practice. I only see patients 3 days a week and have the other 4days for climbing! My partner and another therapist that work for us see patients on the days that I'm not there.

I work @ REI, the greatest outdoor store in the country! I get great discounts and pro-deals straight from the vendor. Don't you wish your BD cams cost 32.95?

I'm hoping to get a job soon, but in the mean time I just save up all the cash that I have until I'm sure that even if I spend 150$ on gear.. I'll still have extra if I really need it. Hopefully the job will speed up that process though!!

I prostitue myself to women with "needs." I then take that money and buy gear. As you might imagine, I don't have very much gear.

I live off of you all that work and pay taxes(military)! I am in the Navy and with some exceptions, it is a pretty good job for climbers.. You always live near a good crag (been in Cally since 98)... well almost always. You get 30 days of paid vacation a year, get to climb all over the world and the pay is pretty good for the ammount you actually work. Plus the CNO mandates work time everyday for you to workout... gotta love that!

I coach horrible children to climb. The money I earn from coaching them is almost all spent on therapy and scotch to try and help me deal with them...

:) I get out as often as possible. I am a full-time employee, a loan officer at a bank, and still find time to climb. My focus is making lots of money to be able to travel to awesome parks to climb. Also, I am taking Mountaineering School for 10 weeks, I just finished my 1st responder course, and I am guiding women's hikes/climbs for the local college. In addition, I make time to meet friends at the local gym and crags to climb. Where there is a will, there is a way!!! It's what's in your heart. Keep on climbing. Jules

I work as a Ranger for BC Parks. It's a cool job, I work 10 days on then get 4 days off, with a 5th day off when ever I work a long weekend. My job also pays me enough to afford to take off for a couple on months every winter and travel overseas. Last year I spent 3 months climbing in the South West US, this year I'm going to Australia for a couple months. One thing I hate is when people tell me "Oh you're so lucky you can do that" Truth is, I chose to pursue my career with climbing in mind. Luck had nothing to do with it.

My full time job pays my bills whilst side work pays for climbing gear and I still have enough time to climb two weekends a month at Yosemite or somewhere in the Sierra mountains during the summer and at the Gym three times a week regardless !!!

Ahhh Credit Cards! The best thing about them is if you change your name you and move to france, the climbing is still great and you never have to pay, and you still get to keep the rack. Of course that means no coming home for Christmas! hehe
