Hi....my name is clueless. Between birthday and christmas I got some money and Iam looking into buying some crampons. Iam not getting any special boots just got some good winter hiking boots with good insulation. So Iam wondering what would be a good pair of versatile crampons that would be good for trekking in the snow and some climbs on a few waterfalls??? so far I like the killerdeals.com

something with straps (as opposed to wire toe bails) would be most versatile. and something semi-rigid.

Do your boots have a welt on the heel? If so, you can use a "newmatic" crampon that's got a heel clip in back, and straps up front. I've seen people climb WI4 and 5 with them, so they've gotta be ok.

How stiff are the soles? If they're not very stiff, youll need to get a rigid crampon for ice. But then you would want a hinged crampon for walking.

In this instance, I would recommend a pair of Grivel 2F's. They can be hinged, then wiht the addition of 2 bolts, they're rigid. Probably among the best "all purpose" crampons out there. I dont know if they're available in full strap though. I'm 90% sure you can get them in full automatic, and newmatic.

I got the BD Contacts, straps-only, so I could use my light leather hikers in moderate alpine conditions without having to lug my heavier winter boots around. The Contact with a clip would work for boots with a rear welt. You probably won't be leading WI4 with 'em, but they'd be fine for following so long as you have nice strong calf and foot mucles. :)

Look at them here:

I had a hard time finding a store that carried non-automatics; you might want to make a short list of acceptable models before heading out to the retailer and expecting them to have them in stock. Cheers, and happy snow'n'ice season to ya.

I really like the design of some of the Grivels. Although alot of them would not go with the average boot. I took the advise of checking out the BD's and I like the contact strap model. It is a completley horizontal frame which is great Iam just wondering how those horizontal front points will hold up as compared to the vertical ones.

The front points shouldn't be too limiting, just demand a different technique sometimes than vertical ones. You should easily be able to adapt to either at first.

My favorite is the Grivel G-12 with the New Classic Binding (straps). They are a good all-boot, all-condition crampon.

Ok Can't find the Grivel G - 12 with classic binding (straps)
I found the Grivel G - 10 classic binding
and the BD - Contacts with Straps.
They both look great, not sure how rigid they are. The BD's look sharper and the Grivels look more durable. Anyone had iether pair. Or any comments. I think its a toss up between the 2. I might order a pair today.

I wa slookin around to see if I could help ya find G12's wiht all strap (I know they come in them, jsut cant put my finger on WHERE I saw it)...anyways...Another choice could be the Petzl (charlot moser) Black Ice. 130-137 dollars for the pair, come with anti ball plates, and are available in an all strap version. Heres a link to them at Mountain Tools...

Good luck. I'll post if I can find G12's with all straps.
