This was the last, best picture in a series before the sun peaked around the left edge of the cliff. Its always disapointing when you have a nice angle, good climb, well dressed climber, and then the sun goes and does something uncooperative! Just goes to show you that everything has to come together for photos to be excellent. I would have loved to get a bit better action during the next few moves, this was as good as I was able to get before the sun created problems in the frame.

I was going to say that this is the best scan you did, but than saw that it is from a digital...
First thing I want to say, is that if you shot the image before she had clipped, that would have been a lot better. I always prefer images, where the climber is above its protection, it adds insecurity to the image, even it is a very easy route. The reverse is here, she is clipped to the bolt next to her, and even if she was climbing a very hard route, I feel she is too much safe/relaxed.
I would crop the image from the left side, such that the rope leaves close to left frame, and she has some space to the right, where she is heading.
I like how she is reaching to the next hold, but not quite there. Maybe a split second later, would have been better, i am not sure.
The top frame is somewhat disturbing. I am not sure why. I feel the next layer of rocks are cut through the frame, too much curvature/contrast at the frame. It might be better if you crop a very very little. 10-20 pixels maybe. Anybody feel the same?

I like that she's wearing a nice bright red helmet.

Bright coloured clothing helps climbers 'stand out' against the rock.

I believe this one was killed by her being dead center. I'd say if you could see more rock ahead of her or even behind her, it would have been better. Dead center is a sin among photographers. ;)

I deleted it--mods wanted me to resubmit as low quality. Just don't have the time/inclination to mess around with it right now. It was a 260Kb file. I'll try to reload it later this afternoon. Or maybe I'll see if I can upload the high quality version somewhere and link it here. Anyone want to host my 9MB file, haha.

What balance do you try to reach with image quality/size? Reaction!

hmm, that pic was a good one for medium, not low. Wasn't it something like 150dpi, which was making the file size huge? If you could get it down to below 96k, it would be approved.

Yeah, I meant lower, not low. I'll resubmit at medium tomorrow. Thanks for the comments so far!

Did you crop the top on the re-submit? I think it is more effective now.

Yes, I cropped the top and left side. I think that suggestion helped focus on what was nice about this--the simplicity of the rock and climber's movement.

I think it would have been better, if you keep prediscussion pic posted as well, i mean at least here in this thread. It will make a nice archive, such that if somebody browses through the previous topics, he can see what kind of improvements were made to the original one..

Yeah, I like the cropped one more. There's just something about the center of a picture.... :?

I have to agree about the clipping/safety issue. If you get her before the clip there is some emotional content to to the pic. "will she make it?" However this doesn't work if she is cruising the route. You need that stress initially.

It's a "nice" picture. I feel safe and calm when I view it.

BTW by "nice" I mean the opposite of stressful, not bad ;)

Thanks everyone for you feedback.

Yes, I agree that some excitement is lost because she's next to the clip. I'd like to reshoot this climb on fixed lines, this is from a large boulder to the side. The clip is done from a stance below the roof, and the corner obscures the climber from this angle.

And I also agree "nice" is a good adjective to describe the shot. It's not spectaclular or striking in any way. But the color and rock shapes are pleasing, and the hint of movement in her hand and in the swinging quickdraws gives a small sense of action and interest.
