I am been told by several good sources saying that Phoenix Bouldering Contest (a.k.a PBC Phoenix BoulderBlast) may be cancelled due to lack of sponsorship. I am been told by several good sources saying that Phoenix Bouldering Contest (a.k.a PBC Phoenix BoulderBlast) for 2004 may be cancelled due to lack of sponsorship. If you know a company who may sponsor PBC, you should contact them at http://www.phoenixboulderingcontest.com.

Jim says this every year. He either threatens to cancel it for lack of sponsorship or lack of cometitiors signing up and every year he has more sponsors than he knows what to do with and more climbers wanting to compete than he has spaces to fill.

Dunna worry. The show will go on. 8)

That was one year out of 27 (??) and occured several years ago. It was a MUCH smaller event then, hardly worthy of national recognition that way that it is now.

Any climbing reatail company would be fool not to get in on the advertising opportunities at the largest outdoor climbing comp in the world. They filled the roster for competitors (600) last year and more than twice that were spectators.

Do you really think that they will not get enough sponsorship? The only way this would happen if he is planning to grand of a show (think of the djs and light show during the dyno comp last year) this year to pay for.

Believe it or not, last year they lost $10,000 dollars. This hit was taken by Jim. I doubt he can keep doing this without sponsorship.

Dude -- not sure who fed you this line, but that's just not accurate. Jim certainly doesn't make a killing from the contest like some people think he might, but there was no negative balance involved with the cost of putting on the contest last year. It's always close, the budget is always tight, there is always some last minute, unresolved issue that threatens to cancel the whole production, but the PBC was not 10G in the red. I'm certain Jim had some out of pocket expenses like he does (in fact, WE ALL DO), but nothing in the thousands of dollars.

1999 PBC was closed due to same reason. That wasn't so long ago.

Relax.

Are you involved intimately with the event this year and have some inside info that I don't?

We are always looking for sponsors, and if anyone has suggestions please pass them along to me, but there is a core group of staff members who have been at the relationship building/sponsorship gaining game for a lot of years. We always plan each PBC like it's going to be the last, because, well -- you never know. But it's way too early in the game for anyone to be talking about the PBC getting cancelled this year.

That was the one out of 27 I was talking about. If you don't chill out, I'm going to bop you one next time I see you at PRG.

Ed, you want in on this? :P

Nah, won't be much left after you're done with him.

Here's where I'm coming from: we covet any publicity we can get for the PBC. It's great to see it mentioned on this site, talked about at the gyms, and to see people already starting to train for it at the crags. But the one thing we really don't need is false speculation about the viability of the event for this year. Do you really think some baseless rumor about the event getting cancelled this year is going to help that company who may be on the fence about sponsoring the event this year? Or is it more likely to discourage a potential sponsor who may think they are signing up for a ride on a sinking ship?

Shut yer pie hole...there is absolutely no factual basis for your rumor, and I don't appreciate it.

Talked to Michelle a couple nights back and she confirmed the rumor (with the added "good riddance"). Seems that the climbing industry has not been doing well this year and sponsorship is way down. I asked if it was "official" and she said that it would be after the Outdoor Products show at the end of the month. Has anyone noticed the lack of PBC adds in the climbing mags? The March R&I doesn't have one and the comp is usually in April.

My gut feeling is that, barring some sugardaddy rescue, it's gone.

I hope I'm wrong.

If the PBC is gone, nobody has bothered to tell Greg V. and company yet. They have been out at Oak Flat as recently as three days ago establishing new problems for the contest--and are putting hundreds of hours into this effort.

It would be a shame to have the PBC cancelled, but I am really much more concerned about long-term access issues related to Oak Flat than I am about this year's contest.

If it's cancelled this year, I'll eat my hat and a pair of...well, never mind. I suppose it's possible, but again...

IT'S EARLY. I gonna have to go talk to Jim. And Michelle.

Well, I go to Phoenix Rock Gym (PRG) alot. Talk to many people at PRG who is involved in PBC such as Michelle. I really want to be wrong. However, everyone at the PRG saying PBC is cancelled. I figure Michelle or Jim will know about 2004 PBC.

I'm new here so I don't want to directly contribute to the gossip, but as a PRG regular let's just say that I'm not getting too excited about the PBC.

Ok...here's teh scoop:

The PBC is NOT cancelled.....as of right now.

They will know for sure by the end of January/early February. There is a 50/50 chance of it getting cancelled and if it's not, it'll be a much more scaled down version which is fine by me. But I repeat:

The PBC is NOT cancelled.
