I read on a post that the sandstone spires residing in the Navajo nation are off limits to climbers now... I don't know about this place or why is off limits now... what's the story for this place?

These towers have been off limits forever I believe. There isn't much of a story behind them. The deal is that Navajo nations own this land and therefore it is their right to grant us permission to climb on them. However, often times these rocks are viewed as sacred and many times used in ritual ceremonies. Hell, if I was Native, I wouldn't let the white man use my rock and I would be pissed he has taken over my country. Anyways, that's what's up. These areas are all over the country and as far as I know they are all off limits. But that didn't stop Los Banditos (do some research on this rad band of crazy climbers) Erock

Ohh that explains a bunch, I will research on them, it sounds like fun, I just imagined all these climbers up in the spires while a ritual or something like that! that would be lot of fun! actually, some friends and I will be rappeling from a bridge on my town, and I think that's not quite legal... so we are still planning the escape and stuff like that!

governement persecution and religious beliefs are kind of in two different categories. Yes the US gov via the BIA have given it to the Natives like Bella Donna in a 10 man gangbang, but how does that influence and bend religious beliefs. OOoooh the spider woman lives on top, and snatches up nasty children....um, whats that Mr. Eastwood? You wanna schlep cameras and beer up here, let me talk to your accountant, maybe we have no religious ceremonies this weekend, and the spider woman turns out to be capitalist. If it were truly sacred, no money would sway that, EVER, under any circumstances. Didn't we already give those injuns June in Wyoming (really bad joke, sorry)

In reply to: governement persecution and religious beliefs are kind of in two different categories... Yea you are basically right. But I think it is wrong (prejudice) to say that Navajos will betray thitheirligion for $ just because it has happened before. Kind of like saying that all Catholics bugger little boys. It was just a prejudice no respect comment that I was responding to. And it was the kind of attitude that will ensure that no one without a million bucks gets to climb on the res. (Just to get back on topic).

I've heard many stories of guerilla ascents gone bad. Shots fired, car trashed, really bad stuff. Also heard that if you nose around and find the "grazing permit"??? (Think that is what its called, could be anything though.) The people occassionally give permission. There is an AAJ story on it about 5 or 6 years ago. THe climbers kicked down motor oil and some other stuff. Don't be foolish. PS- all religions bend for $$$$$

Avoid the politics and stick to the question at hand. Better for all. Political arguments go nowhere.
