"Why doesn't some one invent suction cups?" "Why do you buy those expensive clips (caribiners) when they sell cheaper ones at Wal-Mart?" "Can I come?" (the Middle school kids I work with ask that all the time... I work in a mental heath facility, I wouldn't trust them belaying me, woud you?.) "Why don't you just use regular rope? It's cheaper..." "Do you use gloves?" "Do you go all the way up?" "What's wrong with your forearms?"

An online conversation I had with a friend last summer: Friend: hey whats up? Me: I'm going climbing Friend: off a cliff? can i have your computer? Me: no.. up a cliff, and I'm not going to die Friend: ah nuts Just to make you all feel a little better, the movie question goes beyond climbing. I'm in my high school drumline and when people find out they're like "Oh, have you seen drumline?" "No.. I hear it's lame." "No it's not, it's cool." "Um.. the sticks on the cover aren't even marching sticks."

I get lots of dumb questions that have been stated, but the thing my non-climber friends always do is react to the minor cuts and scrapes: "What happened to your hands?" "Oh my god... There's blood all over your leg" I usually don't realize I'm bleeding at all, or care, but to them it's such a shock. The torn up hands from crack-climbing always get winces and remarks. They'll never understand....

Conversation between my fiancee, and her sister. S: I think i'll bring by shoes and harness so we can go climbing. F: In a gym? S: no, outside. F: Are you plainning on taking a rope? S: No. Aren't there ropes already hanging up outside? F:  Even more frightening is the fact that my fiancee's sister works in a climbing gym.

This incident just happened to a little while ago and when i saw this thread it made me laugh. It really isnt a common question but...I was climbing my door jam in my dorm room that lead to the hallway. As i was about half way up and horizontal reaching for the top, a girl stopped and said "Ya know normal people just walk through them". I replied, while still hanging, "Im not a normal person." She then said "I can tell." Too bad she was ugly, cause she seemed quite interested in my finger strength.

I always thought climbers were opened-minded, and never judging a climb or a person from afar :? .

A friend who wanted to try climbing. I bring him to the gym and get him on a rope that has, like, 4 routes. Him: "This is so easy" Me: "Try to stick to one color" Him: "I'm color-blind" Another time: "It's not hard to climb; it's the ROCKS (holds) that are too small". "Why don't you lift weights instead? You'll get bigger!" Bouldering: "Where are you trying to go!" "There's no way you can belay for me. I weigh more than you."

I sprained my ankle a few days ago. I was carrying a monster load of laundry down the steps, and something fell off the front of the basket and landed on the step in front of me. My sock-clad foot hit the space-age fabric and I went ass over tea-kettle down the steps, bending my left ankle into a letter "U" with a sickening wet "POP". Since then, while limping around, I've been asked at least a dozen times by people who know that I climb: "did you sprain your ankle rock climbing?" (often in an "I told you it was dangerous but you didn't listen" tone of voice) Grrrrr! Come on! Climbing isn't nearly as dangerous as carrying stuff down the stairs! Had I had a rope and a belayer to arrest my fall, or even a well placed crash pad in my stairway, I wouldn't have gotten injured!!!
