Apps running and files open currently on my Apple G4 at work: Finder (3 windows open) iChat AV (1 window open) Excel (idle) Word (1 file open) Safari (1 window with 4 tabs) Navigator (Camino) Explorer (idle) iCal (idle) iPhoto (open and printing a bunch of stuff) OS X Mail (idle) Photoshop (2 files open) ImageReady (idle) InDesign (idle) Illustrator (idle) Vectorworks CAD (3 files open) BBEdit (1 file open) Interarchy FTP (idle) Flash MX (idle) iTunes (playing) Suitcase (idle) ...that's about average. I'm switching between detailing out a 20'x30' tradeshow booth for fabrication and making changes to a website I coded last week.

I have 15 open at the moment. When I browse rc, I load the forum main page, and open each interesting thread in its own window, then work through them all, replying, and closing them when I'm done. Speeds things up a bit.

"someones up to no good *grin*" Nahhh...I'm just playing. I run some servers in a test network and the first time I put a Win2kAS box online, some clown from the Sudan strolled in and helped himself. It cost me nearly a year cleaning house, so now I maintain the core on a totally seperate network, at least while online. I found a bunch of kewl new toys to play with and am simply trying to see my own core from the DMZ to get a feel for how I look to would be hackers. Maintaining seperation is many times a pain in the ass, and the sooner I can remarry the two, the happier I'll be. I just want to make sure I don't incur a second year of pain and suffering first. So anyway......just how do YOU come by the knowlege by which you easily identify WMD, hmmmMMM?

In reply to: nice! does OS X (panther or Jaguar) support multiple desktops? I've seen several 3rd party apps that create multiple virtual desktops in OS X, but I haven't used any... Panther goes one better and supports fast user switching. I have a couple of duplicate users of myself that I switch back and forth into for various tasks. Each user has their own system and application preferences, so I can use that to my advantage and (as an example) keep one user's photoshop set to hog as many resources as possible (for speed with big art files) and another user's photoshop set to play nice with other open applications (for web work). Each user's processes can be independantly controlled, restarted or killed without effecting the others. As of Panther, you also have an excellent window management utility called Expose which I find lets you able to keep a huge number of windows under control. Using function keys, or (my favorite) hot corners of the desktop, you have the options of (1 ) thumbnailing all your open windows, then picking the one you want active ( 2 ) thumbnailing the windows of the current open application only, or ( 3 ) making all of your open windows scatter to the edge of the screen to quickly reveal the desktop. Click on the edge of the screen and all the windows snap back in to where they were. Saves me a few precious minutes a day. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/expose/
