When it's 10 degrees fahrenheit outside and the nearest decent crag is 20 miles away and you don't have a car....and there's a gym 2 blocks down the road....which one is the better option?

Outside. Always. Dress warmly, find a partner with a car, take a headlamp if it gets dark before you want to go home. Any other questions? :D Rob

Well, I'd go caving. Always 52 degrees in a cave. Lots of opportunities for rapping, scrambling and even hard climbing. And you're in the real world.

Gyms get you strong -fast- but they screw up your footwork if you ever climb outdoors.

i do more gym climbs than outdoors. But that doesn't mean i don't do outdoors too... the thing is that these are inter related. Gym help build technique and strenght while outdoor helps with performance and stamina. I learnt how to belay and lead on plastic. It helps as when you go for outdoors, its a whole different enviroment out there.
