New Hampshire has great amounts of high quality climbing, and several very good gyms. The climbing is mostly granite with some schist, and runs from boulders to trad, and sport climbing. There is alot of information in the NH routes database, the best destinations are listed in bold print. For bouldering, check out Pawtuckaway and Rumney to start. http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/listState.php?CountryStateID=85 Which university are you considering?

Cannon Mountain in Franconia Nothch is great. The Mountain is also home to the first maniquered ski slopes in the US or maybe just the east coast. I can't remember.

Which university? If UNH, Pawtuckaway (best bouldering in the state) is about 1/2 hour away, If Plymouth State, Rumney (mostly sport climbing, limited, but, good, bouldering) is right next door. There is also plenty of trad in the state, just watch out for falling men of the mountain. Josh

If it's the University of New Hampshire, you have a wide selection of climbing within day-trip range -- from Pawtuckaway bouldering and short toprope or trad routes (about 0.5 hour away) to longer trad routes around North Conway or Franconia Notch (1.5 to 2 hours away), or sport crags at Rumney (1.5 hours). You need a car or a friend with a car, there is no public transportation -- although UNH students do have an outing club. Two North Conway-oriented Web sites worth checking out are NEclimbs (info on current conditions, controversies, new routes etc.): http://www.neclimbs.com/ and Chauvin guides (list and descriptions of a few classic routes): http://www.chauvinguides.com/guidebook.htm As you'll see from NEclimbs, it's winter here right now. For a climber, UNH is a fine school to choose.
