Whats are you afraid of more; peeling off a super high boulder problem or taking a huge whipper onto manky gear?

Well, I've done both. I've fallen on gear I thought was mank and it held. The only stuff I've ever ripped, I thought was good. And I've fallen 12-15 feet, not super high and had a good landing so I was ok, once I got my wind back. I'd have to say it depends on what gear is below the mank peice and how close the ground or other dangerous object is. As for the highball, it depends on the landing. There's 20 foot routes I lead cause the landing scares me, and 35 foot routes I highball cause the landing is flat. I do have an old crashpad a PE teacher gave me, so I'm not nearly as careful as you guys with the thin small pads.

Yeah, after I wrote that, I decided kicked in the head was the lesser of two evils. So, is getting kicked in the head like taking a highball fall or falling on manky gear (that doesn't have a good piece right below it)?

trad fall. sure, it may be mank below, but there's also an anchor below that. and a rope tied to me. course, if its the first pitch, i'd call it even, since if the gear is mank, you might as well be high-balling anyway.

As long as I would eventually be caught, the manky gear anyday. If all the gear is manky, I'd take the highball. The fall is fun for me, and highballs have never been a problem. If I know I'm just gonna get tons of air time and safely be caught by my rope though, that definately would be my choice. :D

A trad-fall can easily be fatal. A high-ball fall could be fatal, but is more likely to break bones. Therefore, I think the trad-fall is more sketchy.
