Gas is cheap here (U.S.), way cheaper than in Europe.

It's alwasy been my thought that expensive gas could do us some good-- until there's a demand for more fuel-efficient autos, we won't see them in big numbers on the roads. On the other hand, if fuel's cheaper than water (literally) then most people don't have any real incentive to carpool, walk, ride a bike, etc... or junk their 8mpg SUVs.

BTW-- how bad for the environement do you suppose burning Hummer H2 would be?

Great. Only 3 problems:

1. The US is not a member of OPEC.
2. Oil companies don't make much of their money from selling petrol.
3. Oil companies are not interested in a price war. The price of oil is regulated by agreement bewteen producers, not demand.

Seriously, are you retarded? Do you seriously think that the majors give a rats ass if you buy gas at their gas stations or not? Do you actually think that selling auto fuel to consumers is how oil companies make their money? And furthermore, do you actually think that gas prices go up and down based on how many people are buying gas? Get real. This is not how the oil and gas economy works. You could do to have higher gas prices in the states, last time I was down there practically every second vehicle was an SUV.

"That's been the history of the oil industry, especially here: controlling supply. If they can't control supply, the price plummets," Langley said.

"It's just like it was during the electricity crisis," he said. "You could just look at Enron and Reliant and just substitute Chevron and Shell; they've just ripped a page from the electricity traders' playbook."
