Anyone out there? With the talk of shedding weight for the purpose of ascending the ratings ladder, I am reaching out for my fellow climbers built like a rock who climb the rock. You know who you are. 6 feet + 190 lbs + . Being 6'2 and hovering around 195lbs I am comfortable with my climbing level I have attained. In my youth(being 30 now)and 10 years of climbing, I tried to keep my weight down but that just got me pounded on the ice more in hockey. Sure I can shed a couple of pounds and see my grades increase but that would mean one less pint and one less visit to the Horton's. HMmmmmm is it worth the trade off??

So let's here it for the burly men.....

Solidarity brothers:)

I'm a fat 6'0" and 155 lbs. Most of that is my ego, which doesn't do schnitt to get me up. But, it's great when I'm back on the ground, bragging. Hotties like it, until they get to know the Real Me.

I'm 5'11" 200lbs, no I wouldnt miss 10lbs, but when I lose that 10 lbs this summer I really dont think it will improve my climbing much if any. If I climb hard and often, my body will devlope the muscles needed to do the job and improve, also, at my age (39) I realize I can only expect so much, if I top out at a solid 5.10 climber with the ability to make a good attempt at 11's, then I'll be happy.

I can really relate to this topic. I hate it when a guy who weights a buck ten runs up a hard route. I'm 6'4" and am about 225lbs. I'm not over weight it is mostly muscle. I wouldn't want to be anyother body type. I think the girls like big strong men compared to those little sticks who can sprint up 5.12s. Their are of course exceptions, like Chris Sharma. Some day I'll be that cut too. Hopefully sooner than later.

O.K., I'll "weight" in with my opinion. I'm 6'4" and 249lb. I realize I will probably never set any speed records on the Nose of El Cap, and Dave Graham will never call me to be his spotter on a trip to the Tanks, but I do love to climb and do it fairly well for the petite guy that I am.

The bright side is that I can belay anybody who can get their can off the ground w/o being tethered like a dog toa tree.

Well, I also cannot relate because im 5'11 and 165 lbs. Only thing I can say is:
1. Are you willing enough to give up the treats for some great climbing. If you are then you're a really committed climber
2. There are still things you can eat that taste just as good. There are all those recipe books that give you direction on how to make something really good with less fat.
3. If you do alot of aerobic exercise (running, swimming, ect) and get the weight off, you can eat what you want just as long as you still work hard. For an amazing 2 hour practice you can burn about 1500-2000 calories. At least thats what we did at swimming. I could eat anything I wanted and not gain a pound. Im sure if you first got the weight off, then kept on working hard, you could still eat your yummies

Oh and I am a hotel chef de saucier so I have anything to eat at my disposal. Hard to eat tofu when you have Steak, Lobster chantrelles and anything grown under the sun at your finger tips. Eating is too much fun and a necessity as well.

Hey and one more thing to all you big guys out there.

Any of you heard of John Dunne. He's a British climber, one of our best and he ain't no lightweight, he's a right ol' bloater at times but man, he is one of my rock heros. Sometimes the guy carries a beer gut but he still manages to climb grades of 5.13/5.14. He is one powerful dude even with the excess.

All Im saying is regardless of your size, weight, height or whatever size you are, if you really want to get onto higher grades, if you are motivated enough, then you will do so regardless.

IM 5.6" and sometimes it proves a huge hindrance on reachy climbs, but I don't let it stop me trying.

I like SmellyDude's gig as a saucier. I used to work in a pretty nice restaurant, and there's nothing like them end-of-night leftovers. HMMM.

I would think that talents like his would be an asset on a wall climb, regardless of whether he had to French/Fake Free some of the pitches.

I don't think that fighting your body type makes any sense. Being the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz has been my alleged bane all my life, and there is no way I can put on weight. I don't think a genetically large guy can do any better, trying to get smaller.

Hey, look at John Long. That guy's been pretty beefy for as long as I can remember. Bridwell thought enough of him that he had him do all the free pitches of the One Day Nose Ascent to Boot Flake.

I think attitude and technique is more important. Every climber has stronger and weaker areas, and if you're big, you can probably do the offwidths better. This is why the smart climbers climb as a team, with each member doing what they do best.

What coach ever sent a linesman out as a tight end, or put the kicker in as center? Especially on a wall, it's a long game.

Just a bit 'o' clarification

I think that many people reading this string think that "Big" means overweight, and or fat. This is not the case for every big man posting here. I'm 250 lbs but only carrying 10% body fat. Yes, I do have some excess fatty mass that I could stand to shed, but I am not sacrificing my climbing career for twinkies and beer, not that there is anything wrong with that.

This morning I'm 5'11, 165, but to be honest, I feel stronger at 175. I thought losing ten pounds would push my grades. If anything I have a little less power, and I get sick more often it seems. I think my ideal weight is a bit heavier. I'm off to Tim Horton's.

6'5" and 185+-. At 45 years old I find it hard to stay much below 190. I climb 1-2 times a week, run 1-2 days a week and lift 2-3 times a week. Most of my weight is unfortunately tied up in a set of legs that 13 years of bicycle racing gave me so, short of a stint in bed or in a wheel chair, losing much weight is a moot point. I DO have a picture of John Dunne doing Astroman
http://www.johndunneclimbing.com/html/framesset.html
on my computer to remind me that size does NOT matter.

Well, It looks like This morning I still have all of you guys beat...I am 6 Ft. and a very healthy 250.5 lbs.

I say healthy because I don't smoke or drink, but I do like food. And lots of it.

Now, I am down about 11 lbs right now from my maximum weight of 260 or so. I have lost that 10 lbs in this past 6 weeks. And I plan on losing about 15 - 25 more before the Salt Lake get together..with my goal being 225. At 225 Lbs I am at what I think is my ideal weight. My 3 mile run is 24 minutes. I don't have a coronary gettign out of bed, and I can tie my shoes without passing out.

I am not really doing much other than not eating after 7PM, and I am climbing about 3 or 4 times a week now. But I imagine I wll be starting runnign, or walking anyway, this week to get past the plateau I am hitting...

But for me it's not about being a better climber. It's about living healthier. I know when I was lighter I felt better. I didn't get sick as often, and I wasn't as grumpy.

And I really like it when my skinny pants fit me.

Being the shorty that I am, I can say that normally there are not reachy moves, just powerful ones. Then again, with a positive 4 inch reach, that may help just alittle.

Looks like I'm the fattest!

6'6'' at 260 pounds, some of it muscle, some of it fat. I'm climbing at a 5.8 level right now, I've been climbing on and off for years but I'm now serious about it, and I'm not in caves anymore. The good news is that I've been climbing for almost a year now and I lost 50 pounds, and gained back 10, so I'm guessing that the 10 I gained back is directly proportional to how my arms and legs are almost pure muscle now, and well my belly.... 'nother story
