Great way to get some good muscle, loose weight and push the limits.
It jsut gets you focused on the holds on your moves and takes everything else away

Death definitely has something to do with the passion for climbing, especially alpine climbing. The decisions you make when you climb could very well be your last. Life just makes a lot more sense when you climb, than when you live a “normal” life. It's a simple matter of survival.

When I climb, it is a bond between nature and myself. There are other ways to bond with nature, but climbing is my choice. I love rock, air and the thrill of danger. Climbing helps me keep in touch with the natural instincts created in me. Climbing is also a one on one challenge, while using gear allows me to continue another day when nature wins.

While I know "conceously" that I have managed all the risks, "subconceously" I am in fear of my life, therefore I get the adrenaline rush of fight or flight. It is this balancing act of the mind that I enjoy most. Especially when I am 20-30 feet above small Trad pro.
There are a myriad of reasons why I climb, but the above is probably the most profound and intense for me. Usually what stands between climbers climbing at or just above their ability is their "lead head", as if it's not screwed on right, many are unwilling to take falls from far above their pro, therefore they do not commit themselves to climb outside of their comfort level.
I love to be scared, so climbing through that fear when every nerve is aware is what I enjoy most about climbing. I am not saying one should climb wrecklessly, but if one has managed the risks their is no reason not to climb at or above one's abilities.

i'm afraid of climbing.
there is the kind of climbing thats done in the beginining, when you go top rope cliffs and climbing gyms and what not- where climbing is super safe.
But after that, (if you continue into the realm where you might consider calling yourself a climber) you discover that all of the sudden theres a hightened level of commitment. And theres a new necessity to comprehend your own abilities and limits. A need to critically and objectively evaluate yourself your desires, your abilities, your commitment. And all of the sudden you can't hide anymore every hidden littel corner of yourself is exposed
leading near your limit you make difficult decisions- everything going on in your life exits your head. And you're completely immersed in the reality and mortality of the moment. every breath is only breathed for right now
and after its all said and done. and you're back on the ground- there is no explanation for why you’ve made the decisions you did- whether you continued, whether you bailed off of the climb, whether you shit your pants or made pacts with god or devil.
but you'll remember the climb and how for one brief moment life was primal the very essence of survival desire was quenched - but only brielfly. and you peered into the darkest corners of your soul in hopes of finding an answer to the question of why you are here and why you climb and why you love and why you wake up.
and in retro spect you had an answer while you were there, gripped and sweating on that climb. and tomorrow you'll be back on a climb looking for it again
