I recently was introduced to crack climbing and jamming. The first time I climbed a crack, I was using jamming gloves(A piece of rubber on my backhand). Is there any prefered way to tape your hands for jamming, or just tape em up? Thanx dan

I do have a preferred method of taping my hands for crack climbing, but I have no idea how to explain this to you verbally. So, just try a few different methods that protect the skin on the back of your hands. I'm sure you will figure out some scheme that is optimal for you. Curt

I think that the back of the Metolius tape package that you can buy has instructions, or check one of the falcon guides or even Mountaineering: freedom of the hills. like curt said, it's tough to explain.

Use tape only on routes where you have to (I do!), but not rubber gloves (they are cheating! have you ever seen a vid with someone sending hard cracks with rubber gloves? Of course not.) Anyhow, everyone tapes differently, but the jist of it is cover every part of your hand that you will be cranking on with two or three wraps of tape. Don't wrap too tight or you will be losing circulation when the pump starts to set in. Have fun my man!

curt, You seem to have things covered pretty well, but just in case the poster actually wants some specific instructions on how to tape his hands.... Check out the tape glove instructions at the bottom of this page: http://www.uoregon.edu/...ng/crackclimbing.htm You may want to peruse the crack techniques too.

I would add that you need to make sure to get the area between your thumb/index finger and your wrist. Whenever I don't get this area very good I regret it almost immediately.
