Blog = web log. Like an online journal.

Blogging can be good for professional reasons. A lot of people use it for that. Spread knowledge and develop connections, establish a presence on the net and such. Never done it myself, though. I might.

Basically you keep a journal online for everyone to see. You can also make friends only posts, or private posts if you wish. It almost seems everyone is doing it these days.
