In reply to: Nothing matters except the memory of kissing a three-year-old daughter’s soft cheek. I'm speechless. Great imagery - I can feel my own daughters soft cheek just reading your words. Thanks -

Dude. Thats my kind of trip report... nice, and yet strangly cruel at the same time... ---------------------------------------------- Lawnmower Solo Back Yard, North Slope. Beneath the Billings seracs, Montana 10 am, Saturday April 30 2004 Engine Noise. Exhuast fumes everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Blue cloud holds me tight. Long grass lets go in the deep swings of the blade so that short grass may hold on. Giants of Terror Insects flee vainly for their lives, and I pity not. I will have short grass this day. My machine crushes on. Resignation The day is fleeting, sunny hours mourn those gone by with things not done. Sink is plugged. Garage is messy. Soft embrace of chamoix for drying the truck. Dammit. I wonder who is climbing mountains today. Forgive them father, they know not what they do. Focus Arms pulls heaps of stuck grass from dented blades. Engine coughs and spills blue smoke into my lungs once again before regaining its coveted rpm. Calm Gas is gone. Lawn is cut. Mmmm cold beer. Look mournfully at nearbye mountains. Promise self to be less lame. More like Geo. Death Sun goes down, and with it my chores. Watch the last rays of light fade as darkness steals beauty from the summits bidding me good night. Life Startle awake. Realize its Sunday. Go happily back to sleep. Wake to smell of butter melting with toast and bacon. Mmm bacon. Log on to RC.com and loathe reading the adventures of others. Promise myself again to find a climbing partner and be even less lame.

"To become a crowd is to keep out death. To break off from the crowd is to risk death as an individual, to face dying alone." ~White Noise, Don Delillo i thought a white noise reference might be a propos. i applied to graduate school for creative writing. i know now that the admissions committee(s) made the right choice. geo, you are a retired marine and by all rights shouldn't be posting / writing deep, moving stuff, but you do nonetheless. 8^) i see your quill is as sharp as your front points. fantastic trip report. can't wait to rope up again. r.r.

geo .. wow, superb. i sat motionless after reading, my son laid his small hand softly on my shoulder, "mommy, why arent you breathing." i breathed in deeply, turned to him and smiled, "just reading, babe." stunning report, simple yet effective.

My stomach got upset, I felt the cold biting my skin, and can still hear the roar of the storm... Those were some of the finest words I've ever read. Thanks, bro.

Geo wrote: "Arms extended in the leashes of firmly planted tools, standing on good feet, the pounding and the deadly, omnipresent hiss reach a crescendo. Meditative breathing. Every cycle straining to get a grip on the abject fear pounding inside, every cycle riding the jagged edge between keeping it together and self-destruction." That's really nice dude! Geeez mate, you really gave me a wholloping in both my heart and stomach. Great read. Makes me want to swing those tools again! ....Dave

If for the title alone... I don't climb alpine. But I don't have to to feel this piece. Right on, brother Geo.

Nice read Geo, a superb description of your experience. The 3 Apostles are definitely a place where one can learn what he or she is made of.

I have never done alpine climbing, and I never really thought I was interested in it until I read this, now the sheer intensity of your post struck a deep chord in me. Amazingly powerful words; thanks for sharing...
