Got this news from www.8a.nu:  Elie Chevieux murdered 2004-05-11 We just got an email with terrible news: "I have very, very bad news from Switzerland. Elie Chevieux was murdered in Afghanistan a couple of days ago. Elie Chevieux, 31 years old, first climber to onsight 8b+, winner of many competitions, creator of the holds "Blate" and a really nice and cool guy was horribly murdered with stones in a public garden in Kaboul. He was on his way back home. Elie was a passionate photographer and he was travelling in Russia, Siberia, Japan, India, Nepal where he was around the Anapurna and finally in Afghanistan. He was there with a friend who was murdered as well. Elie we will never forget you."

that is some really sad news. I met Elie in Hueco about 12 years ago. He was one of the most fluid gifted climbers I've ever seen. He always had a smile on his face and played down or ignored the attention he got for his accomplishments. He brought out the best in people. A tragic loss

Elie was an inspiration to me growing up. I had a poster of him on my wall and dreamed of one day being able to onsight hard routes. Truly a loss.

From: www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,9539034%255E1702,00.html Swiss climbing champion killed From correspondents in Geneva May 11, 2004 A SWISS passport found with two men who were beaten to death in an Afghan park belonged to a former world-class competitive climber, police said today. The passport was in the name of Geneva native Elie Chevieux, 30, cantonal (state) police spokesman Christophe Zawadzki said, confirming reports in local media. Switzerland's Foreign Ministry said no formal identifications had been made, though both men were believed to be from the Alpine nation. Mr Chevieux's father, Georges, said his son had left in October on a photography trip that had already taken him to Russia, Japan, India and Nepal. "He must have died for taking a photo too many," Mr Chevieux told the Lausanne daily Le Matin. Georges Chevieux said he received an e-mail from his son last Thursday. "He told me that he was coming home to go to a friend's wedding in Serbia. So when the media said there was a Swiss stoned to death, I didn't think of him." Mr Chevieux said police contacted him yesterday to tell him that they believed one of the bodies was that of his son. He said he did not know his son's travelling companion. His son was second in the world competitive climbing championships in 1995 and Swiss champion in 1996 and 1997. Competitive climbing takes place on climbing walls. The bodies of the two men were found in a Kabul park on Sunday. Police said the men, who were wearing baggy Afghan dress and woolen hats, had been beaten over the head with stones or bricks. An Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman said they had also been stabbed and that one also showed signs of strangulation. Rudi Hager, the head of the Swiss development agency in Kabul which doubles as a diplomatic mission, said the men had registered as tourists at the Swiss embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, and crossed into Afghanistan at the end of April.

Sad news indeed. I met Elie in Hueco back in the day, and was impressed with how talented and unassuming he was. Despite 10 yrs having passed, I don't know that anyone has repeated the Mr. Serious traverse he did.

Sad day. Elie Chevieux was one of the most inspirational and memorable people I have ever had the honor of meeting. In retrospective, this is even more impressive given how young he must of been at the time.

Very sad indeed. We can all blame US policy (ravaging and then abandoning Afghanistan) for these murders.

Hey, without a doubt the people who actually committed the act are the criminals and they deserve the harshest punishment. But the violence towards Westerns in the region is not independent of US policy in the area. So take the red, white, and blue blinders off and see the connections.

My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Elie. P.S. I do agree that U.S. foreign policy doesnt help and may have contributed to this murder but that is a topic for the community forum not a eulogy

This just on 8a.nu today! We got a new wonderful email from 8a.nu member Steve Amstutz: "I have wonderful news. Elie Chevieux is alive. He just called is mother. The informations we have got from the Foreign Affairs Department were wrong. A swiss passport were found on the dead body and a misunderstood was done. I had a discussion with Elie's friends and he is fine, he is right now in Pakistan. Good news for all of us, but we must not forget that two people were killed." This news has been all over the world and his father has been interviewed in newspapers etc. In this case, everything seems to have turned out to the best, but think about how Elie's family and friends must have felt... It's impossible to even begin to understand... from 8a.nu
