hehe engineering + climbing = fun! Anyway, I find other people to be boring...regardless of what they think of me. I'm sorry, but I don't think that playing video games, watching tv, getting wasted every weekend, going shopping, and all the other boring things people do are interesting at all. It seems like a lot of the activities people persue in their daily lives are simply "filler." Like, they are just things used for making the time pass more quickly. However, climbing gives you goals and keeps you healthy. It's not just some sort of diversion from daily life, just to help pass the time. It is what you look forward to while you're at work. While other people can't wait to go get wasted on friday night, I can't wait to pack my stuff to go climbing. I might be somewhat of a hypocrit on this one, since I like going to parties and stuff, but still...I can't imagine how pointless life would feel if it was all I had to look forward to.

Yes, climbing is all I ever want to do and talk about. To non-climbers this is very boring. But I think I was socially enept before I started climbing.

I would say I'm the same level of interesting to my friends (which would be....very), because I have always been rather brazen, quick-witted and funny in a noncritical way, and well-read, thoughtful, blah, blah, blah.... But I was also self-deprecating and a little afraid to be seen as a woman. The interesting thing is that, in the few short months since I started climbing, those two aspects of my personality have practically evaporated. I think it has something to do with how we, as climbers, find our way through the problems that come up as we progress (hopefully this can be a life-long process; the deeper one looks, the more there is to see), such as balance, movement and rhythm. That the choice I make in how I place a foot or hand makes the diference between whether the transition goes - that's an incredible feeling of personal power in a quantum way. My muscle structure is visibly tightening and my posture improving, and this directly affects my self-esteem. I'm feeling good about myself, and it's showing. Confidence is not boring, in any way, shape or form (as long as it's not obnoxious or grandiose). I'm seeing my outer life begin to match what I've been inside all this time, and definitely digging the change. So, apparently are others, because they have told me the transformation is incredible. Now my friends are starting to ask me to take them climbing at the gym I go to. Since I am looking to be climbing outdoors, I'm like..."hmmmm, maybe come fall we'll have an awesome group of chicks out at the Gunks and up for road trips." Watch out!

If climbing makes you boring, you're not doing the right stuff. I can keep an audience riveted with my tales for hours. My teachers stop me in the halls and ask for a new tale.

ok, seriously now, there've been boring people in this world long before climbing. in general, if a person, say, you, is boring, chances are, that's the way you've grown to be, or have conditioned yourself to be, and climbing has nothing to do with it. zilch. nil. natta. after completing the requisite undergrad classes on how to be interesting, many of us find no problems at all climbing and being our interesting selves all at the same time. those people who still think and might indeed find themselves boring, well, please do know that this depressing, fun sapping cross of dullardhood is yours and yours alone to bear. please deal with the issue of overcoming or coming to terms with your boringness on your own. DO NOT try to pass it off as something that has anything remotely to do with climbing, as if it's the climbing that's making you dull, and thereby imply that the rest of us who climb also suffer and manifest the same dullness. WE DO NOT. and don't you even dare

I used to hang out late with my friends, most nights of the week. Then as it started getting warmer and i started getting up earlier in order to beat the heat when i would go climb, i had this delimma...I could either hang out with my friends as we sit around doing nothing trying to think of something to do, being bored out of my mind, or i could go home and sleep, wake up early, and head out to the crag for a much more exciting time of climbing. hmmm, what to do, what to do.

LOL! After 3 pages she says it! Anyway, Climbing made me "more" a lot of tings but not boring. How can such a beautiful activity produce boredom.

[brown]You are absolutely right. I don't intend to generalize, but I get this uncomfortable feeling around climbers- they (we) can be so arrogent and annoyingly intelligent (or so we think) It seems that climbers get this feeling that they are "enlightened" beyond all others. Well, I used to skate- that was a blast, too. My buddies were hilarious! We had good times. It seems that since I have been climbing- my aquantainces have been boring and snobby. Who knows, but I agree with Jetlag.[/brown]

I used to be interesting. I used to take an interest in a wide variety of things in the wider world. I used to read, write, watch too much TV, meet and talk to lots of different people on a wide variety of topics. I used to be witty, funny, charming. And then I started climbing once a week and because it was something new and exciting, it would be the highlight of each week. Every weekend, my thoughts would gravitate towards climbing. After awhile, I got stronger and started climbing several times a week, and slowly - insidiously - climbing thoughts seeped into every brain cell in my head. Nowadays, I am dull and boring and all the jokes I make revolve around sex and climbing and I resort to laughing at my own jokes when I find myself in the company of non-climbers (which fortunately doesn't happen very often). Outside of climbing, I know nothing of current events, politics, popular entertainment, history, science, foreign cultures. I am finding it increasingly difficult to function in society. It's a wonder I still know how to button my shirt. This cannot be right. Something's gotta give. And that is why I am not climbing today. I decided to let normalcy win back some ground, just for one day. Today is the first Saturday that I have spent not climbing, as far as I remember. Am I bored out of my skull? You bet! I turned on the television and none of the channels had anything on climbing. I go on the internet and was overwhelmed to find that so much has happened since I last paid attention to the outside world (Apparently, there has been 2 major wars in the past 3 years) Rc.com is the last site I bookmarked ...and wait, are these things still called bookmarks? But, say what you will, I am proud of myself for making it so far because I just looked at the clock and it's almost 4:00pm. I've read all the posts on this site, I've flaked my rope out 8 times in the past hour and I'm running out of candy, but I figure if I have a heavy dinner, I could knock off early and make it through the night without any major incidents. And tomorrow, as I have promised myself, will be a full day at the crag. :D

i think i'm boring. isn't your opinion of yourself the only thing that really matters? do you feel people don't find you interesting or that you're preoccupied by climbing and feel that makes you boring? if the former, listen to other people tell stories so you can learn to spin your own. you don't have to have had near death experiences to tell interesting stories but they help
