It is great that you are starting to climb....another person is sumcbing to the addicttion.

Well as to gear, i would make sure you try a few shoes on. You don't have to get $140 shoes but figure from 80-100(i climb with scarpa reflexes $100). i would say to down size about/atleast 1 size from your street shoe. More if you can take it. As to the harness go check out somethings at a local shop. the more you pay the more comfortable they will be in many casses. Black dimond has a cool starter set called the momentum package. In this you get a modest harness, chalk bag, chalk, harness beiner and a belay rapel device (ATC). On of my freinds got this package and she has enjoyed it very much. This package sells for 86 bucks.

I hope that this gives you some ideas. It is also good if you have a local climbing store to go and just pump the guys for info. Try every thing on and get a good feel for all of it yourself

If you plan on moving into multi-pitch routes and hanging belays in the future, you should get something that is padded around the back some what. I have a basic Rock Empire harness and it sucks to hang in. My back gets sore from it.

Some sites for super cheap prices:
Goto http://www.sportextreme.com
It has boreal, la sportiva, and One sport shoes all for around 60-70$!!! Which is AMAZING. For a harness, Rock Empire's Peak Plus is an all around good harness and was rated A by climbing magazine. It goes for about 40$. Some cheap ropes can be found at http://www.gearexpress.com under their short ropes. You can find some lengths over 150 ft for around 90$. Biners are around 4-6$ at rockempire.com which is also cheap. For slings and webbing, it is basically cheap anywhere so make your choice. For other gear, (IE belay and descenders) any site will do.
