Is there any real reason to keep any car stock? What fun is there in that?
Ahhh yes, I keep getting asked why I don't have a "bumpin' stereo" in my Mini (classic Mini, the real one), my reply is with the right foot (I get asked the same question about my Camaro too). I probably should get around to taking the straight exhaust off and put the muffler back on... Nahhhhhh.
I have problems when it comes to dirt roads too. Besides my 1960 Mini, I drive a 1969 Camaro (rough body and interior, but runs like a champ), not exactly the cars you want on rough dirt roads (although with the adjustable suspension on the mini, I could raise it enough for ground clearance, but that would look weird with the 10" rims). If I ever get around to rebuilding the engine on my '79 VW BUs, that thing worked great on desert back roads, plus having the back seat fold down into a bed. Barring that, I am looking at the possibility of an 86-89 Toyota pickup, 4x4 with the rear axel converted to a full floater.

My 98 Rodeo is about to roll over 160k fabulous miles. It's a good balance of off road capability (I've taken it up some of the toughest roads in Colorado, including that one that goes up to the Crestones from the East), and road trip comfort (many, many, many long trips, like 6k miles in 2 weeks, without a sore ass). I've driven it hard. Many times on road trips driving 100mph for 30 or 45 minute stretches (living in Texas, that was not unusual), and pounding offroad in dirt and snow, and of course, urban offroading (you know, freeway medians, construction zones, vacant fields - I found it where I could get it when I lived in Dallas).
Before my 98 I had a 93 that I put 100K on. Now I'm in the market for a new vehicle (will probably keep the Rodeo around as a backup and for guests who visit). I'm trying like hell not to buy another Rodeo (just because I would like something different), but I'm having a very hard time finding anything else that has the combination of comfort, off-road ability, decent looks, easy on the wallet, and reliability. The 2004 model has a direct injection, 250hp v6 available, and if you load it up with everything, including leather, it's still under 30K.

I worked at a dealership for a few months and have quite a few experiances with cars. If you want a car that is cheap to buy, cheap to drive, won't have to fix, and can give hell in rough terrain, go with an old Toyota Corolla. My dad owned one(84) that went 12 years and 200k+ miles with only oil changes. My grandpa owned a cabin deep within the Sheboygan Marsh that required driving over bumps fit only for a truck. We'd get there with guys who owned new tucks and they said "hell no" to driving through the brush. The Corrola always made it (save 4 mufflers). The nice part about it was that if it ever got stuck, 2 guy could almost lift it back onto dry ground.
The last one we had was a 92 that survived some of the worst "stupid kid" stunts ever(6 foot jumps @ 50mph off a septic system mound and it still drove 20k miles without problems). We recently sold it for a 98 Sentra. :(
I swear by older Toyotas, even though they lack power, they last FOREVER.

I have the '72 model. Takes me where i need to be, unless the road is really bad. Mine is just covered from bumper to bumper in flowers and fairies. (Don't ever loan your car to your sister for a month :? )

got a knackard old mrk2 escort. little in the way of brakes, the seals are all shot, so it leaks and it doesnt lock up (got five different barrels and only one key). on the up side its got four of us all over the uk and one trip to france. with all the kit.

i got a jeep cherokee, 2 wh drive. But don't take that the wrong way, i've taken this puppy where any other 2 wh drive vehicle could never make it, plus it gets better gas mileage (22-24HW, 16-18 City) than alot of bigger SUVs. Could fit up to 5 people, through all the gear in the back, its great. Smooth ride. Plus if it's raining, like it did on us yesterday, yeah it sucked, then u can just pop the back open (it opens upwards) while your packing your gear up, cuz you can just stand under it.
Plus the best part about it is that it's a JEEP, Jeeps can handle just about anything.

I concur that the Outback is the way to go. We have one and it nicely fits four plus all our equipment. It is comfortable on the road and handles well off road. Decent gas mileage too.

suburu is all i got to say. great for most off road and road. And its mows through the snow if ur a boarder or skier. good gas mileage and the run for ever.
i had an 85 that ran till 250k and was still kickin exept for the over heating part.could of fixed it . but im a broke ass nuger.

I've had a subey for several years now and have never not been able to make it anywhere. I long for an extended cab Tacoma 4x4 to fit all of my toys into and ont top of, but I have been more than happy with the durability, versatility, and economy of my legacy. Not a race car, but it does EVERYTHING well. And it rocks the snow and ice like no other car, hands down!

I recently traded in my 4wd extended cab F150 for a 4wd honda element. I had two f150's over the course of 7 years. I love the Element. Silliest looking car but it is perfect for road trips and cragging. A friend had a one and I laughed at it then we went on a climbing road trip with her son. I bought one two weeks later. Bought a Yakima rack for it and a cargo case. Don't miss the truck at all.

I second the Subaru Outback recommendation. Reasonably priced for what you get, AWD (can go to any crag), slightly higher clearance than a normal sedan but not the horrible gas mileage and other inconveniences of a truck. You can even sleep in the back of an Outback wagon. They also last forever. Look into it; you won't be sorry!

Cherokees aren`t half bad, they`re 100% bad.... on gas that is.....
I had a 92 sport with the 4.0 and it was great...apart from the gas.
Go Subaru. They`re nice, not great ground clearance though....

What do you guys think about pathfinders and 4runners? A friend has a new 4runner and loves it- I wouldn't buy either one of these new, but curious if they pack a nice punch.

Speaking of taking subies to any crag...
I own an outback wagon, and I love it, but it really won't get you everywhere. Or at least, it won't get you as close as you could get. Has anyone driven a suby to the top of tollhouse? I got as far as the ubend when you go back under the powerlines, but I just wasn't going to go anyfurther. Maybe the 3.0l turbo instead of the 2.5, and maybe with less gear...
But there were two dudes chillin on the top in deck chairs beside their cruiser.
Of course, tollhouse is far and away the exception from the norm, and it only would have saved us a 10-15min walk, but anyway... :)

Definitely a 4runner over the pathfinder, but both are nice vehicles. If you need room for more people rather than gear, these are better choices than the Tacoma/Frontier. Just remember gas prices and the inherent 15-18 mpg you will get with either one.

Nissan Frontier with camper shell
4x4 for those sloppy, rutted roads that seem to be along the way to caves and climbs.
20mpg with the AC turn on at highway speeds...a bit better on the backroads and smaller highways.

I drive a fully sic toyota corolla,lowered on 16inch chromies,sports exhaust,doofdoof stereo,would put 17inch mags on but car will rest on tyres my 16's just fit.It bottoms out and scrapes all the way to my climbing spots especially fully loaded with gear,we get pretty weird looks off ppl in their big 4wd's when my little rolla goes flyin past them.When i save a few more dollars i want to get either a diahatsu feroza or dual cab hilux.Oh by the way,no matter how hard i've tried i cant roll the rolla!
