you know that book that everyone seems to have these days ... 1000 places to see before you die? well i think it would be cool to compile a climbing list like that. do any lists of all the fantastic climbing areas in the world exist?

if not, i'll start it:
yosemite, california, usa
joshua tree, california, usa
red rocks, nevada, usa

obviously, i haven't been climbing for long, so this is all i have to add but i'm very interested to hear other's favorites (esp. internationally)

Instead, why not list your favorite moderate free routes by grade (5.9 and lower) including the area. I'm sure this has been done a thousand times before, but I'd love to see what everyone has to say.

Places I want to climb at before I die (in no particular order):

Domestic:
Gunks
Eldo
ORG
Smith
Taquhitz
High Sierras
Tuolomne

Int'l:
Squamish
Patagonia
Thailand
Europe (pretty much anywhere)
China
Japan

These are just those that come to mind right now. of course, given the opportunity to climb, I will go anywhere!

Places I've climbed:
Red Rocks (home crag)
JTree
Yosemite
Buttermilks
Zion
Mt. Lemmon

as for favorite moderates, thats a topic that has been covered (like this one) and is sort of completely different that what the original post is asking for. post your question in a new thread for some great answers!

Bugaboos, Canada
Ceuse, France
Gogarth, Wales

Eldorado Canyon, CO
Rocky Mountain National Park, CO
Hueco Tanks, TX

I've already climbed a couple of times in Rifle, but for some reason the routes there are so hard for me that I've never sent anything there (not even the "easy" climbs). So, before I die I'd actually like to do a Rifle route without getting WORKED.

Mt Arapiles fully deserves its reputation. The only thing that could possibly improve it would be moving it closer to Sydney.

1. Cochamó close to Puerto Montt in Chile. It`s been described as the Yosemite of South America - without the traffic (you have to hike in for something like 6 hours). Check out pictures of Cochamó (and other places) at www.escalando.cl
Chile`s eastern side being bordered entirely by the South American Andes, you could probably climb a different place every day and still wouldn`t have seen everything before you die.

2. Namibia, southern Africa.

Seems like everyone agrees.
Yos.
RR
JTree

Why worry about 1000. Everyone should just go to these 3 places.

 :D

Are there even 1,000 places that people would want to go?
