I'm 5'9", 195 lbs and routinely send 5.16d/V14. When the small, light climbers get in my way, because they're going too slow, I pluck them off the rock and carry them to the top-out in my teeth.

5'4" 112. I climbed this week with a guy 6'2" who weighs less than 160, and one who is 5'10" & weighs 170. Seemed the taller, thinner guy (ectomorph) had reach and a light kind of grace, whereas the heavier mesomorph had more power. In the end, they both climb at about the same level. They just approach the climbs differently.

My predicament..... Im 6 foot 1 and weigh about 162 lbs these days. When I started climbing in April I weighed another 10 lbs. It is terribly scary for someone who was already very skinny to lose 10lbs of fat they didnt know they had. Anyways the main benefit I see to being so skinny is that its blatantly apparent when my arms arent straight. With so little muscle I am constantly reminded to hang and not to be pulling. Although I find I can reach many things my partners cannot, thats not always helpful because I always find myself reaching past good holds to higher marginal holds in order to keep my arms straight and not burning out. Oh and I love a huge stem. Im scared though that one day im going to sink in between my legs and be left with two heel hooks. Yikes! Jeff

6' @ 195 lbs and I'm sure that if I could get down to 175-180 lbs it would increase my abilities for sure! I know I'm to heavy, as I don't need these love handles for anything at all..! I have a very hard time loosing weight but I know I need to shread the lard. For now I look at it like a free weight belt.

I'm 5'10", 152 (weighed in yesterday with shorts and tanktop). I climb in the 11 range. I can onsight around 11c or d sport outdoors and 10c or d trad. Anyway, I think that this strength to weight ratio is only a small portion of what makes a good climber. For example, if it weren't for the pesky gear placements on trad, I'd climb one grade higher. I just hate falling on trad gear. I think it's the psycological aspects of climbing that generally holds people back at whatever level they climb at. For me, currently, that's the factor that limits me from moving onto the next level. For sport, it's the lack of sport climbing buddies. In Nor Cal, it's all about the Valley...

6'4" and 220 lbs. I climb 5.12 on a good day. Strength to weight, ape index, finger size, it all balances out. I climb with strong climbers who always do better than me but I don't really care. Climbing hard climbs is hardly a major concern in my life. I just enjoy climbing, just like mountain biking, dirt biking, wake boarding, hunting, fishing etc. One advantage to my body size is that if one of my punk ass friends starts talking s--t I can simply break them in half.

I usually weigh between 180-190 llbs, depending on if I ate or shit. My "climbing weight" is about 175 lbs. The more you weigh, the more you need to pull up the rock. I sometimes climb at the gym with a weight-belt to increas power, pendurance, and even makes me keep the hips in close. Less than vert, no big deal... The steeper the climb, the more gravity pulls down on those extra lbs... Way overhung, and it starts to make a big difference. If anyone of the 140 lb lightweights think weight doesn't matter... Wear an additional 40 lbs while climbing, and see if climbing at my weight makes a difference.

Remember John Long, he was I believe 200ish when he did the nose...some of those guys were huge. Warren Harding was a larger guy too (of course he was scary as well) . Its about strength to weight...and BALLS. Also mental attitude. Being a larger guy myself (215) I think one thing I miss is seeing more larger climbers. However, climbing is one sport where you see ALL different types of sizes and shapes. I will say though I started climbing when I was 255. Coming down from bodybuilding and powerlifting. Now...(40lbs later) I am climbing better at this weight...around 5.10ish some 5.11. I think its how you adjust to your body and gain your strength at that certain weight. The body is amazing at its adaptations to demands... At 255 I could squat 500 and deadlift 510lbs...could I do that now? Probably not...but at 255 I could not climb 5.6 without HEAVING and needing a beer  Keep climbing. Get at a weight where YOU excel and screw the rest. Climb on!
