I was looking at a crique harness with a Trang Pyramid Belay device and a omega locking biner other tahn that I guess I just need shoes and afte a couple of months I want to go outside .... what gear would I need for sport routes.. quickdraws mainly right? and rope of course

For starters, get a harness, shoes, a locking beaner, and an atc.

Then find experienced people to climb with. You'll start out using their gear, and you'll find out what you need to do the things you want.

exactly what pylonhead said. For the first few months you probably want to be going with someone if you're going outside. The first equipment outside of harness, shoes, and atc, should be for toproping. Then you'll focus on building a rack of quickdraws and pro for leading. Watch your partner build toprope anchors, or have him take pictures or something so you can learn from his anchors. Then you'll probably want to invest in some slings, webbing, cordolette, and biners. You really won't know what exactly you need until you understand the basics of anchor building. A good all round book for climbing and anchors would be John Long's How to Rock Climb, and more anchor specific, Rock Climbing Anchors (also by long). These books will really help clarify your gear selection, as well as teach you basic setups, but they will not replace the guidance of a COMPETENT mentor.

Good luck, and go find a climbing buddy to take you out.

Don't wait, get outside right away. Go boldering. Go top roping. Go follow someone. Just be sure they know what they are doing.

And a few tomes of Ms. Manners.

ghorthas - welcome to rc.com. You've taken a wonderful step into a minefield of sarcasm. First thing, I'd recommend filling in your profile a little more, especially where you are. If you're in Oregon, I'd climb with ya, but we don't know where you are. The partner forums are really useful for finding people to climb with -- be honest with your ablity, comfort and skill and you'll find good people. Also, check out the gear reviews for useful information as well.

Seriously, splurge on your harness ... buy the nicest one you can afford -- you'll be wearing for a while. I wish I'd done that -- I used my first harness (BD Momentum) for about 4 monthes before I replaced it ... the only reason it's not a waste of money is because it's useful to take non-climbers climbing.

Don't worry about the other equipment -- like everyone else has said, meet up with other (more experienced) climbers. You'll learn a system (or set of systems) that you like. Everyone does stuff differently, which means, what works for me may not be what you want to use because you use a different system. Once you know what you want, then you can search the forums for pro-cons regarding the choices in there (for example, autolocking caribiners ... i hate 'em, but others love 'em). You'll save money and frustration that way.

NC is a great place to climb, probably the best on the East Coast. You might want to try getting in touch with the_alpine, aka Chris Brown; he lives in Tampa (IIRC), climbs hard and often does so in NC.

Nope, nothing to climb in NC, nothing at all. Weather sucks, mosquitos the size of sparrows, unfriendly people, really just a bad all around place to be.

Now, Kansas, theres a place a guy could sink his teeth into.......

1 Harness (Singing Rock makes some decent Harnesses) Cost $20-40
1 Locking Carabiner (Jake HMS Locker by Omega Pacific is my favorite)
Cost $20 max
1 ATC Belay Device (The ATC XP is nice for rapping because of the
abitily to stop very suddenly) Cost $15-20

1 Chalkball (Optional) (Any kind works) Cost $2-4
2-4 48 inch Spectra Slings: Cost $6-8 apiece
