Okay so I went to the gym last week after not climbing in 2 months. I am totally 100% a beginner, an eager one at that. So I was doing a fave route of mine (that I used to climb up and down quite easily might i add) and I got stuck in the middle of an overhang, one hand at the top (whatever the proper term for that is) of the overhang, the other hand in the middle. I took advantage of a "natural" (meaning not a resin hold) foothold and ended up using the strength of like my leg from my foot to my knee to balance on the natural hold while i moved my other feet and hand up. Okay i know that was really hard to explain but is this type of move generally done or only if u want really scraped up knees lol? I am just curious. For me anything that gets me to the top works Jennifer

Your right Jen.Whatever works, works. If thats the only way you can do it for now do it.If there is another way that would make it easier on your knees do it that way.Its really up to you.Thats what climbing is all about. No set rules.Just make sure you climb safely.

Aside from hanging on the rope,Or perhaps rocket propulsion,my motto is whatever gets you to the top! This isn't a comp,so,Whatever it takes is just plain fine. Climb Happy Mitch

What you did is fine in my book. A little scrap never hurt anybody and they are bound to come in this sport. Whatever gets you to the top works.

A friend once said to me: "Winning ugly is still winning." Whatever gets you to the top sounds pretty good to me.

Sounds like you might be describing a "kneebar," where you hold yourself on the wall by using opposing force between your foot on one hold and your knee on an opposite facing hold. A really good kneebar will allow you to let go with both hands to give yourself a no-hands rest. -Jay
