I’m considering taking the two-day self rescue course offered by Sierra Mountain Center this fall. Before I cough up $350, I’m wondering if anyone here has taken a course with this company. If so, what was your experience?

I took their level one avalanche class (three days) last year and found it worthwhile. Our instructor (SP Parker) was knowledgeable and friendly and the material was well-presented.

i've had some pretty good experiences with SMC this summer. the guides all really know their stuff and i would recommend them if you're looking for a guide service that knows the area really well.

what i really appreciate is the ratio, no more than two per guide.

i've gone on some pretty nice climbs there this past july and i give a thumbs up. :righton:

they also have some winter stuff too. havent done that yet, but looking into it. :P

I don't have any experience regarding trips/classes with them, but I have tried to take that class twice and there have never been enough people signed up to take it. I have tried doing a private class for self rescue and haven't been able to fit it in with their schedule. In general I have heard very good things about them, but I haven't had good luck actually getting the rescue class to take place. Maybe if you sign up, and I can provide two people then the class may actually take place this time.

I plan to take the class with my main climbing partner. So there could be three of us altogether. Hopefully, that would be enough to hold the class. And maybe this post will generate some more interest...

SMC is usually really accomodating. i'd give them a call and ask for one of the owners, Todd or SP. i'm sure they would be willing to work something out with you all if needed. it's a small company and they're really approachable. never hurts to ask!
