Got a trip going to do Sneffels this weekend. We will be leaving the Springs on Friday, early afternoon. Coming back on Sunday. The plan is to do the standard route on Saturday and possible the southwest ridge on Sunday. Or maybe hitting Wetterhorn on the way out on Sunday instead. If anyone is interested feel free to come along.

Zozo, I'd avoid the standard route. It will be like Disneyland with all the people.....and....... the scree slog to Lavendar Col is horrible. Instead, do the SW ridge only and use the standard route for the descent. Then......do Teakettle or Potosi the next day. You can do either from the same trailhead in Yankee Boy basin. Have fun and post your trip!

Hey Allen, We are hoping that with the early start we can avoid crowds but we might take your advice if there is a line forming at 4:00 am!! I will post some photos when I get back.

Zozo, too bad you're not going the weekend after (Labor Day weekend). There's a few SP folks gonna be there on Sat, Sept 4th to do Teakettle and Potosi. If you want to wait 'til then, bring a harness for the short class 5 section at the summit block. We'll be at the outhouse trailhead in YBB around 5:00 am. It should be fun!

Hey Allen, The beta on Potosi and Teakettle is "Im not going anywhere near those two peaks without better beta!!". They both looked nasty. Sneffels was great. On the way down we came across this older couple digging hard through the talus. We asked if everyone was ok and they said that they had climbed Sneffels 25 years ago on their honeymoon. They had come back to do it again on their 25th wedding aniversary. The husbands hat had blown off in a wind gust and when he went to grab it his wedding ring had come off and was deep in the talus. Needle in a haystack. We wished them luck and got about 200 yards back down the scree field when we heard all this cheering!! We looked back and they had found it! WOW! That was nice.

Did you do the SW Ridge? It's so much better coming down the scree on the standard route than going up. d.

Thanks for posting! All the above! From Yankee Boy there was no obvious route that we could see for Potosi, and it looked to dangerous to just go for it. Same for Teakettle. If you have some route info Id love to hear it to see if we were close. We did the standard route on Sneffels. The southwest ridge looked awesome though, I'll be back for that route next summer! Sorry I keep spelling your name wrong.

In reply to: If you have some route info Id love to hear it to see if we were close. Both Teakettle and Potosi are described in "Colorado's Thirteeners" by Gerry Roach, the Falcon Guide: "Climbing Colorado's San Juan Mountains" by Robert Rosebrough, and also in the book, "Colorado's High Thirteeners", by Mike Garratt/Bob Martin. The route up Teakettle is mostly class three with a 5.3 section at the summit. Potosi is class 2 and best done after a climb of Teakettle.

In reply to: You must hit Potosi from the north side? According to Roach's guide, you approach from the south (YBB), then traverse east under the summit block to the ridge on the SE side, head up the ridge, then to the summit through a gully.
