My school, Mesa State College, has a climbing wall in the rec. center. it is pretty pittiful. it is only about 35'X35', there are only three ropes, and the hardest problem set is around 5.10-. I was wondering what other campuses have walls, and what is the quality of them? Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a search, but couldn't find any similar threads. D

I go to the University of South Carolina and our gym has a wall. It's textured like real rock and 52 feet tall. It's got 5 ropes and the hardest set route is probably only 5.9. I really don't think there's a 5.10 on it.

I go to Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. We've got a pretty weak wall about 30 feet high, with the far right side having bomber jugs and the left being ridiculously hard. There are no set routes and it is horribly designed. There is no technique required, just pure strength wich makes it not that fun to climb. But, it's all I've got and I gotta get my climb on. It will have to do.

last year we got one at the University of Saskatchewan Campus. I dunno what the hardest route that is set on it would be really, but it's textured so we climbed a route on it with no holds and we figured it was probably 5.12. The wall is 50' high, and has 6 ropes. Theres also a full body chimney, and an awesome crack that goes the whole way up (it's jammable). There's even a couple lead routes. Check out the pics. (they were taken when the building was being made, so there's no holds or anything up on it) http://www.usask.ca/..._building_photos.php

Not sure if that was a complaint about the hardest problem or not, but might I suggest that if you don't like the routes, you find out who actually manages the wall and offer to put up some yourself? I think that would be a pretty reasonable request, and you might be able to put up some really cool stuff that you like. Steve

no, there's nothing wrong with the routes. That said, the majority if the university population doesn't climb on a regular basis, and isn't capable of climbing 5.10 or above, so the wall has to be set for the needs of the many vs. the wants of a few. We have asked to be able to go set some routes, but because of liability they wont let us. Instead of setting new routes, we WERE allowed to go and tag certain holds to make our own routes on the existing ones.

I'm not a student anymore but the University of Nebraska at Lincoln has a fairly nice wall with a few routes up to 5.12. They have an even better wall at University of Nebraska at Omaha, it's shorter (maybe 32 feet) but there's about 8 topropes and a nice freestanding boulder. Supposedly the builders (Eldorado Wall Systems) taped a V9 problem that's still hasn't been sent by any regulars after nearly 2 years. It's a great problem but I sure as hell won't be sending it anytime soon. d.

Miami Oxford in Oxford, OH has a nice wall. UC (Cincinatti) is close to Rockquest, which is a great gym. OSU (Ohio State) is close to Vertical Adventures, which is a great gym. OU (Norman, Oklahoma) has a CRAPPY wall, but it is close to OKC Rocks which is an okay gym, and 1 or 2 hours away from some nice crags.

I went to PSU the last two years and the wall took up the front and side wall of a racquetball court, so about 30 feet high and 50 wide. They had tons of ropes though, about 10 in all, it was a real rock type wall. The routes were rated with 1-4 stars for how hard they were. For bouldering it was up to v4 maybe( i can't do one so i don't know what they are like) and the best climber could climb 5.11 so thats what the hardest routes were.

Ohio State has just finished a brand new fitness facility that boasts over 4,000 sq ft of climbing space spread between a top rope climbing wall and what they call a bouldering cave. It is scheduled to open this fall and we will see what the set up is like. Here is a link with a few pics. http://rpac.osu.edu/arc.asp

Laramie has a pretty good campus gym, for what it is. Pretty good routes, pretty nice staff. It just gets stale sometimes. That said, we're all waiting with baited breath for the Backyard to open, should be next friday. It'll just be a different atmosphere, and as such should be fun.

I go to Chico State, and we have a decent wall. We have a 30 foot tall slightly overhanging textured wall, with routes up to 5.12+ on it and 5 ropes. probably about 30 feet wide, so minimal pendulums. We have a 12 foot tall 45* overhanging bouldering wall, about 30 feet wide, we are currently setting routes on it, and I set one that's about V4 or 5, it's waiting on a consensus. We have a vertical, painted texture wall about 30' by 30', with 5 ropes, and a "slab" or "easy wall" about 80* with easy stuff on it. All in all, a pretty nice gym, and we -"the regulars"- are welcome to set routes as hard as we want. The "supervisors" don't know how to belay though, they teach you how to cross load the biner well. She got pissed when I pointed that out to her too.

Paul Smiths college of the adirondacks has a descent boulder room. Consists of a 40 degree 9 foot overhang wall, a lil cave section, and a 9 ft upside down wall with a 45 to get to it, with about 30 feet of regular face climbign stuff.

Oregon State University in Corvallis has a nice wall. They built it 6 years ago. The wall is 37.5' to 42.5' high. They also have a bouldering cave. Unfortunately they built it at one of the main entrances of the college gym. There are a lot of people who try climbing for the first time there, since it "looks cool". Best if they would have hid it in a back corner somewhere. http://oregonstate.edu/...door_Climbing_Center

I went to Rutges University and continue to climb at their rock wall. 25' high x 80' wide 2,200 sq. ft. of climbing surface and steep bouldering wall 17 top ropes Lota of routs(much more than the 35 they say on the site) and once you get friendy with people they'll let u put stuff up. It's also great for meeting prtners as many of the people there are gunks and gap climbers that are or were associated with the university. (good to meet young single climbers) The routes are rated from about 5.5-5.oh s$%t but most are in the 5.9-5.11 range Their anual charity climbing comp ( Rutgers holiday hang)is coming up this sunday. http://www.recreation.rutgers.edu/Content/Rock_Wall.asp The also have a pretty awsome outdoor recreation program and go on a lot of trips that you can get good deals on, and if you don't have the gear they'll lend it to you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVLpZFUuLAU (pictures of the wall at the end+some ice climbing trips)

VTC (Vermont Technical College) where I used to go (and still climb there because its so close) has a wall that is 25 feet tall and about 16 or 20 feet wide. There are 4 top roping lanes, and 2 lead/sport lanes. The routes there have been getting hard lately, but they have been as low as 5.5 (currently the lowest is about 5.7), and have gone up to 5.12b/c. There are also a few bouldering problems, from V1 to V5. Overall, I like it. But then again, I climb there for free, so that helps a lot too :p
