what is everyones favorite on line store? I'm doing a little research for a project and want climbers input. Why do you like your favorite? What makes you go back to them or not go back to them? What would you like to see them do or not do? Thanx for the input, stickels :D

Northern Mountain Supply has 10% off everything thing that isn't on sale already for cheap as hell, plus $5 fedEX or $2 ground on all orders over $50 bucks. GearExpress has been really good to me also.

great question gearexpress.com has been SUPER nice professional flexible personable and seem to have best prices i had a big list of stuff i needed, and literally made a spreadsheet w all the stuff, then price hunted about 7 places online as well as local retail joints and noted all prices from all suppliers for all items (I know i know! climbing will BE my hobby!) gearexpress was overall best total pricing - by far when they were out of stock on an item, they shipped me a higher end item for same price (a harness!) ps: the "blem" goods like biners appear flawless and are less $$

In reply to: Death to online stores! Support your local shops, and that doesnt mean REI. Some "whys?" What's wrong with on line? Are you against technology? Are mail order catalogues as evil? Problem with REI? I've been a member for almost 40 years. It's a coop and pretty responsive to members. Has contributed greatly to training and encouraging folks in outdoor sports. Do you simply object to being successfull?

so is shopping on line a matter of convenience or solely price driven. I realize your not going to buy 20 feet of webbing on line but......... are you kids more concerned with price or convenience (i.e. in stock item, back order, having it right now). Also it seems like service is a big deal to you guys, do you feel like Gearexpress.com gives better service? Moreover, are you likely to shop at the same place twice assuming a good shopping experience? last one: What "incentives" would you guys like to see or would like to continue to see (i.e. free shipping over x $ spent, free "this" with a purchase of "that")

If there is a great difference in price then I'll get the online bargain. If the prices are even similiar, then I buy locally (mostly AZ Hiking Shack) to support the local climbing shop, even if they have to order it for me. MOst of my online purchases have been with Gear Express, with very excellent results so far.

If I know exactly what I'm getting then I'll shop for price online and buy online or if it's only available online then same. But I like to investigate a product first.

I like REI. I don't understand why people hate them so much. My reasoning is that I buy my stuff where ever I can get it the cheapest. I don't have a lot of money to spend just to support local shops. Also, the closet "local" shop around is about a hour and a half away in the Gunks.

Mountain Equipment Co-Op is an amazing place to buy any gear. It is Canadian, and cheap as hell. I seriously don't know why Americans don't buy from them. The stuff is cheaper in Canadian Dollars than it is when compared to your American Dollars, making it extremely cheap.

Mountain Gear hands down the best gear shop out there. I would support my local shop, but they are slightly overpriced and not very beginner friendly. This doesnt matter so much now, but it did when I started climbing. I found Mountain Gear then and now they have my loyalty. :D

I actually "try" to support most of the online shops, but as I stated in the 1st reply to this thread, Gear-X is the best in my opinion. Other good online stores that I patronize are: Pagan Gear, Acme Climbing & Climb-On. Mountain Gear has a hell of a selection, and I have bought from them, but unless they are running a special on something, their prices seem to be much high than most others'. BTW: Those claiming to support local rather than online, need to remember that most of these online stores ARE local for someone. Gear-X is the closest physical store to me, but since it's still a 4 hour drive, I prefer to order online or via phone.
