Is it uncommon to use runners to reduce rope drag on sport routes? If so, how many of what size should I be carrying?

It is uncommon. Just use long draws.

It might be worthwhile to carry one runner, but only for the very occasional off line/funky bolt placement.

I have used runners on several sport routes.

There are things to keep in mind. U want to make sure u are not placing a runner so that it would increase your fall and you would hit the ground. Definitly on the first 3 bolts i would put draws.

What i do is, since I mainly climb trad in NC. I make a trad draw, which is a over the shoulder length runner that is folded over 3 times to be about the length of a quick draw. that way you can clip it short if u need to clip it short, or extend it out if u need the full length runner.

And then sometimes i just grab some quick draws....depends where you climb.
