Sly wouldn't be pulling a fast one on us would he?? There was a website somewhere awhile ago that was actually professing to be selling bolt guns. The site looked professional and all, but not really oriented towards rock climbing.... Gullich is the man though!!! RIP

I don't know about the rest of you, but the idea of weekend warriors wielding bolt guns sends a shiver down my spine. God help us all if such a creation is ever unleashed upon the earth.

I was told by a few different sources that Gullich was the double for Sly and was the climber in all of the long distance camera shots. Sly was never more than 10 feet off the ground. Am I wrong, and if so who is the climber?

I know that, for one part in the movie, i haven;t seen it yet so i can't say but I think it was the part where the girl fell off the rope or somehting cuz her harness broke that David Breashers(sp?)was the stunt dude in that. Thats about all I know for that. Brittany

according to the internet movie database www.imdb.com, both wolfgang gullich and david breashears did stunts for cliffhanger although they were not listed in the movie credits.

I have no idea why this information is taking up space in my brain(I wish I could forget that movie) but the climber Gia Phipps was the stunt woman who took the big fall.

Yes, the climbing doubles were listed in the credits. I have a copy of the movie (don't laugh!) Stallone's climbing doubles were Wolfgang Gullich and Ron Kauk.

Wolfgang Gullich did do stunting for cliffhanger. The opening scene is about the best shot you get of him. He died in a car accident going home after filming his last clip on the set.

Back to the bolt gun, someone was telling me that if ever such a thing was created, the climber would be blown off the mountain from the recoil of the gun, since it takes such force to get a bolt in.

I dont see how a bolt could be driven into the rock like that. I mean, how are you going to shoot a 3/8 inch spike into granite?

OH, there is a bolt gun... ever heard of the Compressor Route on that one spire (can't remember the name) in Patagonia? A little larger perhaps, but a bolt gun nonetheless!

Ktwo, The "spire" you mentionned, that has a route called "the compressor route", is actually "CERRO TORRE", one of the most famous mountains in climbing history !!!! It is worth reading the history around this route...Very interesting JUAN

David Breashear's Biography High Exposure is a really good read. he talks a bit about Cliffhanger. Apparently, Sly's ranger partner actually climbs. That movie is really silly. Almost was silly as Ed Viesturs in Vertical Limit. Its all about getting paid...kids.

Not to mention that Sly runs around in a cotton t-shirt and what looks like Carhart pants while climbing at altitude. He wouldn't get a chance to use that bolt gun because would would have expired from the elements long before he made high enough to place a bolt.

Of course, only a pro climber would solo a huge wall with a harness, nuts, cams and bolt gun. Who wouldn't? You never know when you want to place some protection!

The "BOLT GUN" that they used in the movie was a Hilti powder actuated fastener and they DO exist, however if you tried to use it on rock the rock would just blow apart and the pin would bend. These are typically used in construction to anchor steel studs to concrete.I've seen the pin bend right over in "soft" concrete never mind trying it in granite. Can anyone say rock imbedded in your skin??

It is difficult to "shoot" any type of steel anchor into something solid like concrete or rock. Even the devices that do exist are mostly for shooting 1/8" nail-like anchors into concrete and are not perfect. The main point is that in order to get a solid and reliable anchor, you need to drill a hole first in order to maintain the strength of the surrounding material. If Stallone's bolt gun were real, where would the rock go that was in the way of the bolt as it was driven? It certainly doesn't compress like the wood surrounding a nail as it is driven. Ok, I'm done ranting now.
