I was wonder what sort of age the climbers on this site started at. I have said when i did in my profile but i was wondering what age others started at. I dont need to ask about the older climbers that are still climbing its just depends in how fit and determained you are. And also if you are someone that started young how did you get started.

i got into it 2 years ago, when i was 16. i love it, but like tradpuppy, i haven't been climbing solid. i've had to take months off at a time to handle college applications and final exams and stuff. maybe next year i'll be able to be more serious

My first climb was at the age of 19 or so I think - now I'm 26. Yikes. Like others, there are times when I don't or can't climb solidly. Right now I only get on the rock like once a month just due to a busy life and weekends spent traveling/visiting family etc. Other times I climb regularly (3 times a week or so) - it all depends on money and time. EDIT: Oh, and I got started through a friend of my dads actually - he's a NH climbing guide who works at RME up in North Conway where my first days of climbing began. Knowing folks who already climb is the easiest way to get into it and learn fast. [ This Message was edited by: howitzer on 2002-05-22 08:56 ]

I started at the age 26. However, I don't think you are ever to old or to young to start. My son started climbing at age 5, snowboarding at 2, and paragliding at 4.

I wish I climbed earlier like some of you teens but never really had the opportuninty.I started when I was 22 and I haven't even been climbing for a year yet. When I first started off I liked it.Second time I liked it even more.Third day even more and all of a sudden I was in climb mode. All I could think about was climbing. Not much has changed.

I started 2 years ago when I was 49. Doc told me that I had osteoporos and that I could suffer a spontaneous hip fracture from just waking down the street. Told me I should start doing moderate weight bearing exercises, change diet and start taking calcium and supplements. So I did and also started climbing. Bone density has increased beyond the the doctor's expectations and I'm happy doing something I always wanted to do. I boulder, top rope and am just starting to think about trad. Naitch

I am in my third year of climbing and started when I was 50 years old. Can't begin to thank my climbing partner for getting me into it. Did my first trad multi pitch lead this past February and can't get enough of it. You're never too old to take it up. I envy all of you younger climber having so many years of climbing ahead of you. Boy!!! Glad to hear there are at least a few of us old guys out there... I started about 8 months ago (Oct. 2001). I was 36 at the time. I just had a birthday and turned 27... That's because of climbing! I decided I'd take 10 years off this year, so now I'm not that much older than all the 20yr. olds here. I started because of my kids if you can believe that... My then 5 year old daughter Kali said to me as we walked into REI one day... "daddy, I wanna climb that thing!" I said, "are you NUTS???" Well, that was the middle of July 2001. She's been climbing ever since. Along about September, she says to me, "daddy, when are YOU gonna climb?" Do I need to tell you any more??? Live Free! Play Hard! Climb On! duskerhu

It depends. I only started geting active in climbing about a year ago, however, I have been periodicaly climbing since I was about 13 in Boy Scouts. Also, if you really want to be pickey, I've been climbing all sorts of odd things for as long as I can remember -- Hamburgler statue when I was 8, etc. [ This Message was edited by: suprepopps on 2002-05-26 19:43 ]

I agree with xtremelivin .. it's never too early or too late to start ... it's all about the obsession ... Personally, I discovered the wonderful world of rock climbing last fall (at 25 yrs), but my son started climbing promptly at 5 yrs. He also wakeboards with his godfather, and dirt bikes with his adopted uncle. ... our household motto is "crazy keeps you alive; stupid gets you killed." .. rock on ..

I started climbing back in 1996 when a really cute rock climbing guy asked me on our 1st date...we went to Paradise, the local gym...we then lost touch when we went off to college, and I climbed off and on, but not seriously...then, in 2000, I really got back into it and hit it hard, and was reunited up with that cute rock climbing guy who taught me everything I know, and well, he's now my boyfreind of 2.5 years and the rest as they say...is history..
