20/10/2004 Ian Parnell and John Varco made the first ascent of the north-west face of Saf Minal, 6911m, in the Garhwal Himalaya, India. Their route rises 2000m, initially as mixed climbing on poor rock and snow covered slab, and then higher through ice couloirs. Three days into the alpine-style climb the pair were trapped in their half-erected tent for 36 hours by a storm, before they opted to push higher despite the conditions. It put them within striking distance of the summit and they made their final push in good weather. A two day descent with little food, a cut rope and much sacrificed gear was reported as epic.
