This purity you seek is only an illusion.

Henry Barber said that the purest form of climbing was the barefoot, chalkless, onsight, free solo first ascent. Everything else is compromised.

The trivial danger renders it impure. There is no oppostion, since you cannot fall (more than a few feet, at least.)

Where there is climbing, there should also be falling.

And a well trafficked toprope has more impact than an obscure sport route.
I would agree with some of the others. I enjoy sailing, even open-water sailing, which is arguably as dangerous as trad climbing. I was once hit by a waterspout. I can assure that did not make my trip any more pure. Setting up a sport route that is run out 30 feet between bolts is more dangerous, not more pure. I climb because I enjoy climbing, not because I have some kind of desire to cheat death. Sunday, my partner wanted me to pull a rope up the last 50' of a route we were trying to put up so I could set an anchor at the top so he could follow (slabby with no way to protect). It was only like 5.6 or so, but we were already 200' up and I could have fallen a long way. I could have made it up in a heartbeat, but I wasn't willing to bet my life on it. Anyone who thinks that danger is necessary to climb purely should avoid breeding so that they don't end up orphaning their children.
I'm gonna do some nice, friendly highballs this weekend. Like toproping, I'll be worried about trying to make it to the top, not getting hurt. It'll be a little too chilly to do it naked or barefoot, though.

Ha! A frequent misconjecture due the appellation with which I've appointed myself...my handle refers to the single large piton I've driven, not my preference in mind-altering substances (of which I've sampled in my youth, but from which I currently abstain)

climbing is just as much psychological as it is physical....

without having to think beyond the rock to get you past a crux, climbing won't be climbing i think...top rope is totally different...its easier always...its a mainly for fun or beginners(EVEN FOR BEGINNERS, THEY MAY HAVE THE FEAR OF HEIGHTS, SO THEIR PSYCHOLOGICAL ELEMENT IS STILL THERE)...but leading and seconding, i'd rather do any day than top roping...this is very hard for me to think about and explain at the same time....sorry.

(great thread though :righton: weither i disagree or not)

Baa! Butt dragging lowball traverses from sit-down starts to sit-down ends. I fear no fall but for the pinecone poking my left asscheek.

the purest form of climbing is starting at the bottem with all your gear (or without gear if u choose to free solo) and no beta or route description, and then getting to the top without using anything preplaced or leaving anything behind.

thats just my opinion
