The gate to Red Rock Canyon Open Space will open this Friday the 29th. I don't know if the climbing will be officially open, but I should be going on Saturday to check it out.

It looks like this will be a great area!

Hey nebolo. I'll be heading up there on Saturday as well with my sons and a few others. If you need a partner, you're more than welcome to join our group.

Finally its open! Thats great you guys are heading out there. My dad and i put up two routes just past tthe ripple wall on a bigger slap that leads to steaper climbing. I wasnt sure what you guys wanted to do that day, but if you were over there mabe you could check them out and post what you thought. I think the one on the left is probaly 10d and the one on the right is 10b. An input is appriciated. Thanks.

For those of us from the hinterlands where is Red Rock Canyon (C. Spgs I know) and how do you get there? May be able to stop by Sat. after the state Cross Country Championships.

From I-25, take Highway 24 West (exit 141) until 26th St. Take a left. Should run into it. There are entrances at 26th and 31st streets.

Directions: Take first left past 31st ST. going west on highway 24, I think it's marked ridge road. You'll see it past the large cut-out section of red rock that the highway goes through.

Very cool! I'm looking forward to checking it out once I get home.
I know Stewart is supposed to have a guide out soon.

In reply to:
RULES FOR TECHNICAL CLIMBING AT RED ROCK CANYON OPEN SPACE

Technical climbing at Red Rock Canyon Open Space (“RRCOS”) is limited to the main section of Red Rock Canyon that leads south from the lake. No technical climbing is permitted in the historic quarry. TECHNICAL CLIMBING IS NOT PERMITTED IN OTHER AREAS OF RRCOS.

All of the rules entitled “Garden of the Gods Technical Rock Climbing Regulations and Guidelines” apply to RRCOS.

RRCOS is a new sandstone climbing area with approximately 80 established routes. Climbers shall utilize only these established routes to minimize the risks of environmental damage. As a new sandstone climbing area, climbers should keep in mind that in addition to the typical climbing risks, there will be a greater-than-normal risk of holds breaking off, even on established routes. Use of a climbing helmet by both the climber and the belayer is strongly recommended.

Established routes are set up with bolted rappel and lowering anchors below the cliff tops. Climbers must not leave unsightly colored slings on the walls except in case of an emergency.

Any new route development at RRCOS is a managed process. THEREFORE, NO NEW FIXED PROTECTION IS TO BE PLACED AT RRCOS WITHOUT GOING THROUGH AN APPROVAL PROCESS. At the climber’s discretion, individual bolts may be replaced for safety reasons. For more information on establishing new routes, contact the Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department at 385-5940. Ask for contact information for the Red Rock Canyon Climber’s Committee. A moratorium on new bolted routes will exist until December 31, 2005. After that date, all new routes will be reviewed through a climber committee process. Final approval will be made by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Service Department.

Red Rock Canyon is a cool place! I'll be heading down there frequently this fall/winter. Lots of slabby sandstone sport routes, mixed in with some trad lines as well. I had the pleasure to meet with Stewart while we were out there. He seemed pretty proud of his work out there, as he should be. Lots of fun.

I agree, RRC is a pretty cool spot, and it's a short drive from my house. :D Thanks everyone for climbing with me and Tristan, we had a good time. I'm going to check out a few more of those routes soon...weather permitting.

Sweet! Let me know when you go. I may bring the boys back on Saturday again if the weather is good. This time both boys climbed! Alec (the younger one) made it all the way up his first route. 80 feet or so! I'm such a proud mamma!!!

What do the trad lines go at there? Did anyone scope them out?

Hey Vince thanks for letting me climb with you Saturday, it was great. And mother_sheep and sharpie, nice meeting you both.

And --cough cough-- the correct directions to RRC are: Highway 24 West from I-25, take the first LEFT after 31st street and you can't miss the park entrance after that. Take the wide trail past the trailhead maps that curves around, passes a house and pond, and the climbing areas are on both sides of that main trail. Stewart Green mentioned he might be selling the new mini-guidebook there this weekend.

Saturday anyone?

Well, as an overview, how are the routes there? How does it compare to GOTGs? Glad to hear everyone had fun climbing there this weekend!
